Maker Faire Berlin 2015

Maker Faire Berlin 2015: 2015

Ricc - I blog for you

The Maker Faire is gaining more and more and spreading. Therefore, there was already the second this year and she expanded her sphere of influence on Berlin. However, since the space was limited and there was only a small outdoor area, this time I left my racers at home and made my way as a visitor on early Saturday morning. The punctuality of the site was a plus, and the quietness gave me the opportunity to talk much more with the stand operators than was previously possible for me as an exhibitor. So I also had the opportunity to get to know the YPS kangaroo closer, which obviously also pleased about my visit. Eventually, one or the other acquaintance also pulls a project, of which I will then certainly report here.

Meanwhile, the Maker Faire should be so well-known that a bigger performance is barely necessary. To whom, however, it has hitherto been hidden, which of course is said to be the mecca of hobbyists, inventors, geeks and techies. The Maker Faire is not a trade fair where only companies present themselves. Every private inventor, developer, home improvement or hobbyist can exhibit here. That's what makes the Maker Faire a Maker Faire and therefore unique.

However, I have to say that I also like the idea of introducing young companies and presenting their great products. I would like to discuss a few examples today.

With almost 80000 visitors, the organizers can be satisfied. At first I was a little disappointed with the ambience and the size, but this was during the day. Berlin is not Hannover, as an organizer explained. Although Berlin is very large, the environment is less populated, which will be reflected in the number of visitors. While in Hanover, at 10 o'clock, visitor queues formed before the opening, in Berlin it remained relatively quiet even at the opening. The silence, however, lay down quite quickly and many visitors pushed from stand to stand. For the stand operators, the smaller structure was certainly an advantage. You hardly had the chance to escape and just had to look at everything. Even though I realized by now that I did not see everything despite the long time.

Powerplex - material of the future?

Stand of Kraftplex

As already written, I had much more time to talk with stand operators and to take a closer look at their ideas. That's how I noticed a power plexus. I already knew the name from the cordless screwdriver race in Hildesheim, where particularly light vehicles were to be built from. As simple as the material is, it is also brilliant. 100% pure natural materials are processed and wood fibers pressed into a "wooden sheet". This sheet of wood can be bent, bent, deep-drawn, lasered... just everything that can be done with metal or plastic. It can also be coated or painted. Interesting, however, is also a design by Pyrography, which was on the Maker Faire already seen at some other stalls. For me it is interesting in several areas. On the one hand, it was possible to build filigree cases for computers or electronic gadgets and, on the other hand, a cladding for one of my cordless screwdriver drivers. I keep that in mind.

CNC milling for hobbyists

Made for me by Schaeffer AG

As a trained CNC machinist, of course, I stayed with Schaeffer AG, who presented themselves with a small but very nimble CNC milling machine. This mills at very high speeds Alumium plates and thus manufactures front panels for housing, name badges or what anyone can come up with it. The interesting thing for me was of course the machine and the tool change was a real feast for the eyes. But even more ingenious is the ordering possibility, which I did not know so far. With a software that can be installed on any computer, a corresponding shield or a panel can be designed. This design is sent in and can be ordered immediately in any quantity (even single pieces). Of course, I did not hesitate to mow our home maker.de in a golden aluminum plate. Maybe I will use it again for a later project.

Furthermore, I noticed MakerBeam, which produce T-slot aluminum profiles, or CoolTool, who presented their Unimat series. These small machine tools in the modular system have done me a little. Of course I can not introduce all the exhibitors directly and everyone else can forgive me. It was a round concept in Berlin everyone has found its interesting areas. I've focused more on the manufacturers and companies this year, but I do not want to deprive you of more. Therefore here is a colorful picture gallery:
