Clean masonry

When cleaning masonry can be the internal and external cleaning (facade cleaning). The following guide deals with the cleaning of masonry on the outside of buildings, but can also be partially applied in other areas.

External masonry can be polluted in many ways

Masonry, which is exposed to the weather, tends to dirt. There are a variety of different contaminants:

  • mortar residues
  • To dye
  • Algae, lichens and mosses
  • Dirt particles in general

Requirements: which masonry and suitable cleaners

Of course, before masonry cleaning, it is important to know what type of masonry it is. Natural stone masonry requires other cleaning agents. Here is to pay particular attention to acidic cleaning agents. In addition, detergents should not contain any surfactants, as they will accumulate and formally attract dirt particles. As a rule, you should only use cleaning agents that are suitable for stone and masonry.

Clean masonry dry or wet

When actually cleaning the masonry you must distinguish between dry cleaning and wet cleaning. If both cleaning techniques are combined, the masonry must first be cleaned dry.

Dry dry masonry

For the dry cleaning of masonry you need a root brush, possibly a rough wooden block as a sanding block and a spatula. So now superficial impurities such as mortar spills or leaked salts are removed.

Wet cleaning of masonry

When wet cleaning you have to differentiate between cleaning with pure water and high pressure (steam jet) as well as wet cleaning with stone cleaning agents.

First with the steam jet, then with cleaning agents

The cleaning without cleaning agent with the steam jet is usually intended as a preparatory cleaning. This way even solid algae, lichens and mosses are removed. This is followed by a cleaning with suitable cleaning agents. When using cleaning agents, make sure that they are rinsed with sufficient water after completion of the actual cleaning. There should be no residue left on the masonry.

Not every season is suitable for masonry cleaning

The wet cleaning drenched masonry. Therefore, you should do this work depending on the season, so that the masonry can dry completely again. Preferably, the external masonry should be cleaned in late spring or summer.
