The milling of GFK allows extensive machining

The process of milling is related to drilling and applied to large diameter. The machining principle of the drills or milling inserts is well suited for the processing of glass fiber plastic (GRP). Milling is both flat and horizontal possible as well as piercing and hole-forming.

Strong physical forces

Milling machines are machined by rotating movements of the milling head GRP. In this relatively coarse or rough processing, the proper application of the effect is particularly important. When milling GRP, the layer structure of GRP can be injured or damaged during milling.

Milling is both flat and penetrating and the spindles of the milling head come into direct contact with the glass fabrics or glass fibers in the GRP. Incorrect tool selection or wrong rotation speed can damage the inner structure of GRP. Fiber structures can wrap around the milling head or suffer uneven "distortion".

More than with any other type of machining, it is necessary to try out, before milling, how GFK behaves and which machining method fulfills the desired function without causing damage to the material. This includes the consideration of the temperature development during the milling process.

This is how you go about milling

  • Cold water
  • Stationary console or bed milling machine or
  • hand milling machine
  • Milling heads (roughing / pre-milling and finishing / finish milling)
  • spray bottle
  • Respiratory and eye protection
  • gloves

1. Select milling head

Depending on the task, you must select the appropriate milling head. Pay attention to careful handling as the sharpness of the cut edges is a decisive criterion when milling.

2. Clamp workpiece

Fix the GRP workpiece or component according to your milling machine. Even when using a hand-held device, you must fix the workpiece. Milling causes enormous physical forces.

3. Trial milling

Put on the milling head and do a trial run. If the milling point heats up too much, slow down the speed of rotation. Pay attention to the glass fabric or the glass fibers. When winding around the milling head, you balance out a higher running speed with the temperature development.

4. Cooling

You can slightly delay the temperature development by spraying with cold water.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to mill GRP, you must approach the process on the principle of "trial and error". Milling works are only suitable for experienced DIY enthusiasts.
