Build a mobile workbench yourself

When crafting and repairing the intended work and goals can be very different. In larger households or workshop areas, building a mobile workbench yourself is the perfect solution. The mobile mixed construction between work table and workshop trolley makes the workplace more comfortable.

Mobility and power supply

If you build a multifunctional workbench yourself, you can put the design on wheels. Since a fully equipped and equipped workbench not only has a high dead weight but also develops the pressure loads when machining workpieces, the rollers must be designed for the possibly resulting total weights and force impacts.

The second important element for the mobile workbench is the power supply that a workbench needs to be lit up and provide connections for equipment such as a drill, soldering iron, grinder, saw, or other electrical crafting equipment. A sophisticated connection and wiring technology avoids falling down, trip hazards and too limited action radii.

Selection and suitability of the roles

The central element of the mobile workbench are the rollers on which it can be moved. With the right selection and assembly the suitability and function stands or falls.

Lockable brakes for the mobile workbench are indispensable and the weight tolerance must be appropriate. Conventional furniture rolls are usually not strong enough resilient. So-called castors follow a path of movement and travel, which facilitates maneuverability.

To determine the required roll load in kilograms, the following calculation method is used:

1. For four wheels attached to the corners, the maximum weight including the machines and workpieces shall be calculated.

2. The total weight is divided by three. The result defines the required load capacity per roll.

3. If 600 kg can come together, each roller must be able to carry 200 kg.

4. For six wheels, the total weight is divided by four.

Light and power supply

Ideally, a central supply line is attached with a cable that powers a power strip on or on the mobile workbench. Thus, when moving only this one wiring and decoupling must be considered if necessary. A cable reel with spring technology or a cable clamping box prevents individual cables from tangling. Devices do not have to be separated individually from sockets when changing position and can fall from the workbench due to carelessness.

Balance and fall security

The mobile workbench must not tilt when moving, even if it is unevenly "loaded". For example, clamped workpieces can cause very unequal weight distribution.

The rollers must be fastened as close as possible to the outsides from below on the workbench. Corner posts or beams on wooden workbenches provide the ideal mounting surface.

If a workbench is made of metal, it may be necessary to weld separate angles or sheets as a fixing aid.

Tips & Tricks

Achieving a low center of gravity in your workbench increases rolling and stability. For example, you can mount a thick metal plate as the bottom floor.
