Mold in the bathroom: causes, prevention and elimination

Especially in bathrooms, as in many wet rooms, the risk of mold growth is particularly high. Which areas are particularly problematic and where there is a particular risk, read in this post, how best to prevent it, and what points you must pay attention.

Water vapor problem

Especially in the bathroom there is a special problem: when showering or bathing in the relatively small rooms creates a high amount of hot, very humid air. Since the tile coverings are usually colder, the water vapor settles there - it condenses. This has to do with the different dew points.

Moisture problems in the bathroom

Tiles are usually waterproof, but tile joints are not always. There, the condensation can adhere for longer, and in time also penetrate into the joint material. Tile joints stay moist longer than the tiles. Even in so-called "cold corners" in the bathroom, moisture often lasts a very long time, because it can not dry out properly due to the lack of heat.

Typical mold zones in bathrooms

  • tile joints
  • silicone joints
  • lower corner areas in the bathroom
  • Corners in shower cubicles
  • plastered (unflushed) areas

Ventilation problem in the bathroom

Baths that are not daylight (ie with a window outside) often have poor ventilation. In many cases, ventilations for the bathroom are also undersized and often equipped without exhaust fans. This makes it almost impossible to vent the short-term arising, such high moisture levels.

temperature problems

In many bathrooms, there is a risk of mold, because bathrooms are often not heated continuously, but during the day, the heating is often operated only at lower temperatures. This also makes it more difficult to ensure that the bathroom dries out, which in turn increases the risk of mold.

Prevention of mold in the bathroom

To prevent mildew in the bathroom as much as possible, you should note the following tips:

  • ventilate intensively several times a day with daylight baths
  • When bathing or showering, if possible, leave the window already tilted in daylight baths, so that not so much moisture accumulates
  • In case of ventilation, make sure that the amount of exhaust air is sufficiently high, and that the moisture can be ventilated as quickly as possible
  • after showering or bathing always dry the tiles in the bathroom, especially in the corners
  • Make sure that all areas of the bathroom are well ventilated when ventilating
  • Keep the bathroom also heated during the day, and provide for regular ventilation
  • Maintain optimum bathroom temperature (21° C - 23° C)
  • regularly measure the humidity in the bathroom, it should not exceed 60% relative humidity
  • do not ventilate through the open bathroom door (this will cause moisture to enter the living space, which in turn can lead to mold problems)
  • If possible, do not dry the laundry in the bathroom and do not hang wet laundry
  • Paint plastered areas as far as possible with lime paint, which also has a moisture-balancing effect.

Remove mold in the bathroom

If you notice traces of mold in the bathroom and it is not a large-scale infestation, you can carefully try to remove the mold yourself.

Mold in the silicone joints

The most frequently affected silicone joints can be treated with mild infestation with mold cleanser, better still with alcohol from the pharmacy (80%). It is therefore essential to dispose of all rags used for disinfecting the joints and stop reusing them (otherwise the spores will spread). Best to wear rubber gloves.

Heavily affected joints

Silicone joints or tile joints, which are heavily affected by mold, must be removed. Tile joints can be sanded out, silicone joints must be scraped out. Make sure that everything is free of mold before you make joints again.

Tips & Tricks

If you have shower curtains in your bathroom, you should spread them out after showering so that they can dry as quickly as possible. Even if you can eliminate an already occurring infestation with mold remover, nevertheless you should always make sure that you eliminate the basic problem as well as possible.
