Mildew on the window: how can he remove himself permanently?

Have you discovered black spots on your window frame that look completely like mold? This problem usually occurs in cold, wet weather when the water collects on the disk and runs on the lower leg of the frame: molds love cool damp areas. But our lungs do not like mold spores, so the fungus should disappear quickly and just not come back!

Remove mold from the window itself?

Normally, you do not need a specialist to handle a fungus populated window. However, with a wooden frame, there is the possibility that the mold anchors deeply in the material and thus destroys the substance of the window.

Normally, a painting protects the wooden window frame from such decay phenomena: an important reason, therefore, to carry out a regular painting control. You can remove the mold yourself with some caution - and then prevention is needed!

How come mold on the windows?

Warm indoor air collects evaporating moisture, for example from cooking, showering or the human body. Wherever the air cools again, water settles as cold air can hold less moisture. This process takes place at the so-called "cold bridges" of the outer walls.

Windows often act as thermal bridges, due to poor insulation and glass with its low insulation value. In the cold season, windows cool down strongly depending on the outside temperature, then especially a lot of condensation is deposited on them.

By regular, intermittent airing not only dry the windows again, the humidity is reduced. The cause of mold on the windows can therefore be too rare ventilation - but sometimes the air exchange helps nothing more when the windows are ailing.

How to remove the mold thoroughly

Mold fungi on the window can be combated with various alcoholic home remedies as well as with a mold remover from the drugstore. Overall, highly alcoholic substances (at least 70%) are the drug of choice, as they are particularly effective in tests. Follow these steps:

  • Take a pack of cotton buds and dip the cotton into the mold remover or Spirtius. Now rub the surface with cotton swabs and dispose of them one by one in a ready-made bag.
  • After removing the mold, check the rubber seals: If they are already moldy at depth, you must remove and replace them. In the case of silicone and rubber seals, blackish discoloration is noticeable in this case, the material feels porous and does not hold properly tight.
  • Use a toothbrush to treat stuck mold, and use a toothpick to scrape the mushroom out of narrow pits. Work as thoroughly as possible.
  • Then disinfect the affected area over a large area with alcohol or mildew remover. Let everything dry well.
  • If you have removed the gaskets, it will now be time to renew them. New rubber seals are available in every hardware store: just take a piece of old rubber with you to buy the right size.

We recommend wearing rubber gloves during mold removal and, depending on the severity of the infestation, getting an oral mask. Always moisturize the fungus so that as few spores as possible can settle in the air.

So bow to the mold by the window

So that the mold can not spread again, preventive measures are needed. One of them you probably already done: Replacing the rubber seals, because leaking rubbers ensure increased cooling in the window area.

You do not come around to the regular airing, it is best to create a humidity meter (hygrometer) for the room in question. In the winter months, the humidity should climb over 65% if possible, so that no water deposits on the window.

Ventilate by completely opening opposite windows for a short time. Perform this procedure at least two to three times a day. If the ventilation is of no use, this may be due to still leaking windows or other structural defects.

Install ventilation system: an alternative

An increasing number of modern houses already have a ventilation system that makes it unnecessary to open windows several times a day. Maybe this would be something for your four walls? Find out about the advantages and disadvantages of this technical solution.

Tips & Tricks

Moisture always settles at the coldest point in the room, so cooled walls or windows represent a permanent point of attack for mold fungi. A professional insulation keeps the outer walls mold-free.
Always make sure that the indoor temperature in your premises does not fall below 16 degrees, because this would favor the formation of mold. Avoid permanently tilted windows in the cold season.
