Completely remove mold from the wall

Word has gotten around that mold not only has visual effects, but also harmful to health. It is inevitable to remove any mold immediately and without residue. Up to a certain infestation intensity is still with home remedies. In case of deeper infestation or recurrence, a specialist is required.

Basic features of the mold on the wall

The removal of mold is always in the removal or removal of the affected areas and places. The cause must not be ignored, since mold forms new forms very quickly under suitable conditions. When cleaning, no spores should be overlooked to prevent further growth.

Another important aspect is the possible spread of spores through cleaning. Dry mold spores are very airworthy and are carried on by light draft quickly. In the worst case, this transport of spores already provides the basis for new moldy esters.

Protect health while removing

It is not exaggerated to put mildew on walls with toxic or hazardous waste on a level. Accordingly, appropriate action should be taken before removal begins:

  • Remove clothing, food and toys from the room
  • For example, cover textile surfaces dust-tight on seat cushions
  • Before moistening, soak up the loose spores as much as possible
  • Do not "make wind" at work. Keep windows and doors closed
  • Keep children and doors out of the room during work
  • Wear protective clothing such as rubber gloves, respiratory and eye protection mask
  • Minimize skin contact with long-sleeved clothing and long pants
  • Do not spread mold spores through (protective) clothing, store in a plastic bag after work and wash at least seventy degrees Celsius

Moist walls have to be rehabilitated

Mold has the property of growing on the surface of a wall in most cases first. When the mold "comes out" of the wall, wiping is no longer possible. Then at least the wall covering (wallpaper, plaster) must be removed at the affected areas. Then you can check if the masonry is affected. In this case, a professional renovation of the damp walls is inevitable.

If deep-seated mildew on basement walls occur, often a construction error in the drainage of the basement wall is the cause. A professional repair is also required in this case. In some cases, renewing the wall insulation and / or impregnating helps. If, after surface cleaning, a musty odor of the wall is removed, "invisible" persistent mold must be assumed.

Methods to remove superficial mold from the wall

Mold may form on the surfaces due to generally high humidity, condensation or improper ventilation behavior. These spores, as long as they have not yet penetrated the wall or wall cladding, can be removed with different tools:

Vinegar (essence)

A natural enemy of the white horse is sour environment. On all walls except limestone walls, the mold can be wiped with a cloth soaked in vinegar (essence). On limewood walls and lime plaster mold growth is favored and reinforced.

rubbing alcohol

Alcohol disinfects and removes water. From a concentration of at least seventy percent, it also affects the concrete or stone pores when applied to the wall. The removal must be done in several passes, as alcohol evaporates very quickly.

hydrogen peroxide

The hair dye eliminates dry mold. If the mold has residual moisture, it must first be dried. However, a "lifting" of the spores, for example, when blow-drying the wall must be considered.

special agent

Fungicides and other chemical agents, for example containing the ingredient chlorine, should be used with caution. A bit of their application can be compared to the proverbial "exorcising the devil with Beelzebub". Although the mold is dead, other toxins are spreading.

Professional removal of mold on the wall

When deeper mold requires a wall to be drained, professionals are required. The profession of building dryer does not exist. Usually, sanitary and construction companies offer drying.

Qualifications for the proper implementation are:

  • Professional qualification in a related construction or installation trade
  • Proof of inter-company further education on the topic
  • Extensive assessment of mold infestation and definition of the cause
  • Creation of an action plan with cost estimate
  • Implements emergency measures such as superficial mold removal, removal of objects and materials that can be attacked by mold
  • Works preferably with mechanical methods with the least possible use of chemical aids
  • Suppliers who want to eliminate the mold by means of disinfection are unqualified

Both the self-removal and after a professional renovation multiple timely checks are required. Only a few remaining mold spores found a new colony. Professional removal of damp masonry is always the responsibility of the building owner.

Tips & Tricks

Since mold infestation on walls in homes is known to be harmful to health, there are some institutions where you can get help and information. The Federal Environment Agency operates a network of mold fungus counseling and counseling centers for environmental medicine throughout Germany.
