Mold under the PVC floor - what to do?

If you peel off a PVC floor, it can come in at times a frightening amount of mold. What can be done in such a case, what are the possible indications of mold under the PVC floor, and where the causes may lie, you will find in detail in this post.

Mold and PVC floor

Mildew especially spreads in areas where there is little air exchange, where moisture can not escape, and where sufficient nutrient supply is available. Thus, the area under a PVC floor, when wet through, is almost an ideal habitat for many types of mold.

Signs of mold under the PVC

Since the area below the floor covering is not visible, it is at most made aware of the smell of mold. But that does not always have to be the case, since under the dense PVC soil hardly any odors go up. The fungus can thus often spread very freely and very far before it is noticed (usually only when removing the flooring).

Schimmel report

A professional appraiser can detect and detect small infestation species by means of a beagle or by measuring the metabolites (MVOCs) emitted by microorganisms and molds into the indoor air. If you are in doubt, you will be sure to get a certificate - even without removing the soil as a precaution.

Renovation of moldy PVC floors

Types of PVC floors

PVC can be laid in different ways:

  • as fully glued PVC floor
  • as loosely laid PVC floor
  • as laid or glued PVC tiles or floorboards

Renovation of the fully glued PVC floor

When removing fully glued PVC, it must be remembered that the glue may also serve as a nutrient for the mold, or at least may contain mold remnants and spores. So it must be removed and the glue residue. The PVC floor should definitely be disposed of completely.

Renovation of loosely laid PVC floor

Here it is sufficient to dispose of the soil only. Then you can search for the cause of the infestation.

PVC as tiles or floorboards

If in some cases a locally precisely defined infestation shows, it may be possible to dispose of only the planks or tiles (and the adjoining ones) in the place of infestation and to insert new tiles after the mold has been removed. However, that will not happen too often. In most cases, mold spreads far below the floor before it is discovered.

Basic remedial measures

The most important part of the renovation concerns the detection and removal of the source of moisture. Mildew can only occur if the substrate has been soaked, or is still taking place. In some cases, drying equipment may also be required.

Tips & Tricks

Always keep in mind that even on other occasions mold may not always be immediately visible, for example behind wall panels or ceiling coverings, or in areas that are not directly visible. Appraisals are therefore often worthwhile if you are not sure if there is an infestation.
