Glue natural stone for fixing instead of mortar

In most cases, gluing is preferred to mortar when fixing natural stone. Above all, the dreaded cement curtain on the natural stone surfaces is thus avoided. It is important to use a suitable adhesive so as not to damage the natural stone. The risk can last until the adhesive migrates through.

Thin and even

Natural stone is glued in principle better than laid in a mortar bed. As adhesives, especially polymer, polyurethane and silicone products are suitable. It is important to stick to the wall with horizontal bonds, as with natural stone slabs, which keeps the weight of the brick permanently and safely.

A very important feature of any glue is the complete filling of all cavities on the underside of the natural stone. Especially outside, moisture that has otherwise penetrated during frost can cause the stone to "blast". The biggest challenge is to saturate the adhesive, but to avoid "walking" through the stone pores and capillaries to the surface.

Substrates and suction behavior

All plastic based adhesives for natural stone are also suitable for absorbent materials on the substrate. Aerated concrete or wood may need to be primed to balance or reduce absorbency.

Since "hiking" or shine through of the adhesive can never be ruled out, it is always advisable to choose a light, transparent or white adhesive. Manufacturers offer almost every glue in different colors. Also important is the order strength. It should be evenly and, above all, as thin as possible. Note the elasticity behavior of the dried adhesive. If the adhesive is too "soft", natural stone slabs stuck to the floor may otherwise sink and destroy the leveling.

Application method and precautions

When processing adhesives or silicone, a few points should be noted:

  • Avoid contact on natural stone surfaces as far as possible
  • Mask edges of the stones to keep out swelling glue
  • Apply two-sided buttering technique and wet both surfaces
  • Using the notched trowel, draw grooves into the applied adhesive to aid in even, thin distribution
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding mixing, opening and use exactly and in detail

Tips & Tricks

If you then grout your natural stone, think about the compatibility of the adhesive with the grout. Ideally you use products from the same manufacturer, which are adjusted to each other.
