Stick new floor tiles on old tiles

If old tiles are to be covered with a new layer of tiles, the state decides on the effort in the preparation. Undamaged old tiles are suitable as underground, as long as they are fully functional. Fractures, cracks or holes can be easily bridged with new joint glue, wobbling and loose old tiles not.

Check and prepare the substrate

In a stable and in all places fixed tile layer, the floor structure can be used as a substrate. Leveling the floor with tile adhesive is easily possible up to about two millimeters. Larger compensation heights must be checked on a case-by-case basis and, if necessary, can be absorbed by food or mortar lining.

If several and larger bumps or even wobbling and loose old tiles are present, the application of a complete leveling layer is advisable. The first liquid leveling compound forms an ideal surface after drying, in order to bond new floor tiles.

So you glue floor tiles on floor tiles

  • Primer or primer
  • floor tiles
  • Tile adhesive or
  • Food or
  • mortar
  • masking tape
  • tile cutter
  • notched trowel
  • spirit level
  • spacer
  • Laying aid / leveling system

1. Clean / equalize

If you do not cover the old tiled floor with a liquid leveling compound, you must clean the tiles thoroughly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Dust and fat may no longer be present.

2. dry exercise

Lay your tiles dry on the floor as you would like to lay them later. Help with the exact alignment of the joints with spacers such as wooden blocks, which you have previously tailored to the desired width of the joints.

3. Cut edge and corner tiles

You can already make the necessary blanks for edges and corners. Pay attention to expansion joints on the wall edges, which are filled with silicone at the end.

4. joints

When laying the floor tiles, make sure that the new joint course intersects with the existing old joints. Parallel joints can both destabilize and create difficulties in re-grouting. Choose the joint width according to the conventional rules.

5. Apply primer and glue

Prime the clean tiles according to the manufacturer's instructions. After drying, apply the tile adhesive to the substrate with a notched trowel in S-shaped lines.

6. Place

Lay tile by tile and use a system to level the new tiles.

Tips & Tricks

Corner and edge pieces can also be placed "negatively" with tile adhesive. Spread the glue on the back of the tile before over-tiling.
