Remove rust from the stainless steel railing

If stainless steel is or has been exposed to certain conditions, it may cause the formation of flash rust. Here we show you how you can remove Flurost on the one hand with simple means, but on the other hand, how you may prevent further rust formation.

Stainless or stainless stainless steel

The term stainless steel is colloquially meant always stainless or stainless steel. Such stainless steels are very popular for handrails of all kinds both indoors and outdoors. Stainless steel railings are weather-resistant and even rainwater can not harm the alloy.

Stainless steel pipes are not protected against any substance

This is a passive layer that forms on stainless steel surfaces. However, this is not resistant to everything. So there are certainly substances that break through this passive layer of stainless steel:

  • salts
  • many acids, also heavily diluted
  • Particles of other metals
  • the contact with other metal components

Harmful substances due to the local environmental influences

Salts are to be expected in the air, especially near the coast, but also in the vicinity of chemical industrial plants there may be substances in the air that add to the stainless steel. In coastal areas, therefore, a still higher quality stainless steel, which is also immune to salts and chlorides, find use.

Flash rust due to processing or storage defects

However, if the conditions are not exceptional and there is still flash rust on a stainless steel pipe, it may be due to contact with other metal components or metal particles during machining. For example, sand stainless steel with sandpaper already used for other metals and place these metals in the stainless steel.

This is where the oxidation begins, followed by the rust. But even metal particles found on the stainless steel pipe while working can be responsible for flash rust. Therefore, stainless steel is often additionally protected with a plastic film. In addition, stainless steel should always be stored separately from other metals and processed naturally. Only tools and aids that have not been used for other metals may be used for processing.

Contact with other metals

Likewise, contact corrosion can occur when the stainless steel component, in this case a stainless steel tube, comes into contact with other metal components. When two different metals come into contact, the less noble metal will always begin to oxidize uncontrollably relatively quickly.

However, you can easily remove the rust from the stainless steel pipe, as long as it has not been around too much. You can use special cleaners that contain phosphoric acid. If you do not have such a cleaner at hand, cola is also an excellent substitute.

The phosphoric acid contained in the soft drink is intense enough to remove the flash rust from even more heavily contaminated stainless steel surfaces. Allow the coke to act like a suitable cleaning agent for up to half an hour. Then they wipe it off like polishing. However, if the rust has already progressed too far on the stainless steel pipe, you must polish the stainless steel.

Tips & Tricks

There is a relatively new technical process (patented), in which stainless steel can be selectively oxidized (this is a rust-resistant layer and therefore not possible with stainless steel). This layer protects the stainless steel against further chemical reactions even in contact with other metals.
