Old surfaces in new splendor: refresh joints effectively

Tile joints have an intense visual effect: Dirty joints in dull colors form an unsightly frame for beautiful tiles. Would you like to refresh your joints with a color? Or is sufficient for a thorough surface cleaning? We will explain you how to proceed best.

First, the cleaning is on

Even before jointing, cleaning is required so that the paint can adhere well to the substrate. You may even like the joints after the thorough cleaning so good that the color is no longer used.

We recommend the following means for cleaning the joints, which have already proven to be effective against lime, grease and mold:

  • steam cleaners
  • a creamy mixed baking powder mixture
  • Dishwasher rinse aid
  • shampoo
  • Citric acid or vinegar essence (dilute and use carefully)
  • Ammonia or spirit against mold
  • for persistent mold: mildew remover (observe precautionary measures!)

To thoroughly scrub the joints, a toothbrush has proven to be extremely useful. After the cleaning, you should remove all cleaning agents thoroughly wet and then dry everything well.

Refresh joints with new paint

Before applying the joint color, ensure a firm, clean surface. That's the only way the color stays really good. If necessary, glue the edges of the joints on the left and right with a painter's crepe - or work "free hand".

Stir the paint according to instructions. The consistency should be neither too fluid nor too firm, so that the color does not melt or streaks. To refresh your joints, apply the paint with a small bristle brush.

Have a damp cloth ready if paint drops get on the tile surface. Wipe off all blobs as quickly as possible so as not to permanently contaminate your tiles.

Allow joint color to dry and, if necessary, impregnate

The exact drying time of the joint color can be found in the leaflet. Until completely dry after about 24 hours, the joints should not be wet or mechanically stressed.

It may be necessary to apply a second coat of paint to thoroughly freshen the joints: this is best judged by visual inspection yourself. Spotty spots and a translucent surface are signals for repainting.

Against renewed dirt and the ingress of moisture helps impregnate the joints. You may do the dyeing and sealing with the right material in one go.

Tips & Tricks

Choose a joint color that is in stark contrast to the tile color to accentuate the tile pattern. A uniform, harmonious surface can be achieved with a shade that looks as similar as possible to the tiles.
