Every building is based on a concrete foundation

For buildings of all kinds, a concrete foundation takes on the role of legs and feet. It ensures lasting stability of the structure above it. Depending on the forces involved, it is individually designed and can be created in three different ways. Reinforcements made of steel additionally increase the stability.

Point and strip foundations

A concrete foundation is an anchorage extending into the ground that supports walls, floors and other structures. Basically, a distinction is made between three different types of foundation.

The point foundation is a concrete casting into a hole on which a supporting part is placed. A typical application example is the ground anchoring of posts and pillars, for example when installing a concrete fence.

According to the designation, the strip foundation consists of an elongated strip and is typically made as a substructure for a concrete wall. It will also be used to carry a continuous surface structure.

When a concrete floor is poured, the foundation usually consists of strip foundations and rarely a full-surface foundation is chosen. A typical example is the attachment of a floor slab in a building such as the basement floor.

The method of pouring a concrete foundation depends heavily on building construction and static loads. For residential buildings, foundations have to be calculated by experts and approved by authorities. In addition to the type of foundation, the concrete composition and thus the strength class also play an important role.

Reinforced and unreinforced foundations

In addition to the strength and load-bearing capacity of the concrete foundation, tensile forces must also be taken into account. These lateral and vertical forces acting on the foundation occur, for example, on slopes or on extreme weather sides as near the coast increasingly.

When creating the concrete foundation in addition to the general stability, in particular the tensile strength can be increased by steel reinforcements. Usually steel rods are used in foundations. Depending on the following structure, the reinforcements are only in the foundation or project upwards.

A typical example of reinforcing steel projecting upwards is the procedure for casting a concrete wall. The reinforcements projecting into the casing are enclosed by masonry concrete. In this way, the foundation and the structure are even more connected and almost inseparably connected.

Approval-free foundations

If the load on the foundations is not burdened by load-bearing parts such as columns, walls or walls, it can and may be created without static calculations and approval. When making your own concrete floor, for example for a terrace, the concrete foundations can also be cast yourself.

If a garden house should receive a foundation, the size is crucial. Regional building regulations regulate the claim and permit requirement for the concrete foundation required in each case.

Concrete foundations must be established frost-proof. Therefore, a minimum depth is required, which must never be under forty centimeters. As substrate for the concrete foundation, a layer of gravel or grit must be introduced into the construction hole or excavation pit.

Tips & Tricks

You do not have to make a concrete foundation beautiful, but durable. Therefore, "extenders" such as pebbles or shredded old concrete can be used easily.
