Pallet furniture: build a coffee table made of europallets yourself

Some do not like them, for others they are the eye-catcher par excellence - pallet furniture. Meaningful and practical are definitely. Euro pallets are available in different quality levels, they are cheap to even free and above all, they are one thing: very robust. Their wood look radiates a cozy atmosphere, while harmonizing well with the industrial look.

Another advantage for the self-builder is the intentionally simple design, in which the individual boards do not have to be precisely finished. If one is longer or the table surface is not perfectly level, these are exactly the points that make up pallet furniture. A coffee table made of europallets can therefore be easily manufactured on one day including construction and color.

Our construction manual describes a coffee table made of two shortened Euro pallets with a table surface of 80 x 86 cm. The pallets can also be used in their full size (80 x 120 cm).

Material requirement and tool overview

Material requirements:

  • 2 europallets
  • 4 battens a 68 cm long (3 m)
  • Color, glaze or oil
  • 4 furniture rolls
  • various screws

Tool list:

  • Handkreissäge
  • table saw
  • Cordless Screwdriver
  • Brush or spray system
  • if required, saber saw or jigsaw with long saw blade
  • Grinding tool (orbital sander, orbital sander or similar)

Step 1: Divide two Euro pallets for the coffee table

Align the saw cut to the shortest part

Since a Euro pallet measuring 80 x 120 cm is in most cases a bit large for a coffee table, we divide it next to the middle board. This gives us a rectangular shape of 68 x 80 cm.

When dividing the Euro pallets, however, you should be careful that there is a straight conclusion with the chopping board and the blocks. Only rarely are they exactly on top of each other. It is cut at the shortest edge, as marked in the picture. Partially it is sawed away from the board or from the log something.

After this edge, we align the rail (saw rail, stop or straight edge with screw clamps) and saw the pallet from above and from below. Measure the distance from the edge of the pallet to the rail during the first cut and use it in the following three sections. This makes aligning easier and the pallets are the same size.

The larger the saw blade and the deeper it saws, the lower the reworking. If you use the pallet in such a way that the chopping board rather than the block is cut, this also reduces the following grinding work.

Step 2: Straighten the saw cut

Although Euro pallets are subject to a standard size, they are not exactly worked. When dividing the pallets, it is therefore unavoidable that sawn into a log. The resulting paragraph must be removed afterwards. This requires a saw with a large or long saw blade. Good is a saber saw, if it has a stable blade. However, it gets cleaner with a jig saw and a sufficiently long saw blade. This should be as long as the pallet should be high so that it is accurately guided.

Often, the saw cut runs in the blocks of the pallet.

The supernatant is removed with a long saw blade.

Step 3: Screw the pallets together

In order to reach a comfortable table height, the two sawn-on pallets are placed one above the other and screwed together. If the undersides are lying on top of each other, there are compartments on the side, which can later be used as storage. With a little luck you will also find matching baskets that fit in the cut-outs.

The pallets can be screwed together by the footrests (Fig. 1) or by very long screws through the feet themselves (Fig. 2). In both cases, of course, should be screwed from the later bottom, so that the screws are not visible.

Step 4: Sand surfaces

So that the fragments do not get stuck in the fingers, they have to be removed in time. For this you may start something coarser with 40 or 80 grain. In the inner area, unfortunately, a lot of manual work is necessary. For this, our pallet furniture piece does not require any fine sanding. This one was more likely to ruin the rustic look.

The decisive factors when grinding beveled are the edges on which the pallet wood likes to split. If you value it, you can attach the missing chamfers to the cut edges at this step. Outside, europallets have a large (perpendicular to the table) a large chamfer, but since we have divided the palette, there is not this chamfer at the cutting edge. In the second picture, the comparison is good to see between the front and the rear edges.

An orbital sander wears well and works on uneven surfaces.

A rough cut is enough.

Step 5: Paint the coffee table out of pallets

Coloring to your taste

Whether varnish, glaze or oil remains a matter of taste, the wood should be protected in any case. Not because it would be very sensitive, but on a coffee table sometimes a drink tips over, and this would leave unsightly stains. A water-repellent surface is therefore appropriate.

The pallet table can certainly also be coated with a brush and a roller, but the highly structured and above all "built-in" surface lends itself to a spray application. For this purpose, a fine spray system and wood stain can be used as well as a paint spray gun.

When painting outdoors, attention should be paid to environmentally friendly paint and, in principle, appropriate protective equipment.

Step 6: Close the grooves of the Euro pallet

If you like, you can leave the coffee table in palette look. However, the grooves between the boards are a hindrance when parking the coffee cup. These can and should be closed. Suitable for this are roof battens in the size 24 x 48 mm. The boards of a Euro pallet are about 22 mm thick.

Partly fit the battens directly into the appropriate gaps, if necessary, must be adapted to the table saw.

They may need to be adjusted in width.

In order not to lose the pallet look and adapt the coffee table to the later environment, the strips used can be color-adjusted. As a result, the boards of the pallets stand out clearly and the original pallet is still recognizable defied closed table surface.

In the example, the color gray was chosen because the color combination fits perfectly into the later living room. The strips are bolted from below after fitting and painting.

Step 7: Screw on and insert rollers

Before our new coffee table made of Euro pallets takes its final place in the living room, he needs feet or even better roles. These are quite cheap to get on Amazon.de and quickly screwed.

This completes the coffee table and the resulting compartments can be used for books, magazines or filing.
