Pallet furniture is absolutely trendy for a variety of reasons: While some people appreciate the rustic style and the used pallets may look quite worn out, other people simply enjoy cheap pieces of furniture that also exude their very own charm.

Not to forget, of course, is the craftsmanship aspect. For the creation of chic and at the same time individual furniture you need not only manual skills but also expert knowledge and a lot of practice. Pallet furniture, on the other hand, can be built without much effort or special tools. With jigsaw, hammer and cordless screwdriver you are already well equipped and can create his own pieces of furniture.

We would like to present different variants with different surfaces. Both examples are of course suitable for any surface treatment.

Pallet rack with color design

building instructions

This pallet rack is quite easy to build and fits into any interior through a different color scheme.

Remove footboards

In the first step, the lower boards are removed. Depending on how well the nails can be removed, the boards can be removed completely or sawn between the feet. Since many pallets now have feet made of glued laminated timber, variant two is recommended, as the feet are less visible and the entire shelf retains its real wood character.

Fix shelves again

When the boards have been sawed out, the pallet is set up vertically. The sawn boards can now be placed in the middle of the feet and screwed on.

Danger: The middle board is wider than the two outer ones. If these differently wide shelves are also desired on the shelf later, the two wider blanks can be mounted at the bottom, in the middle or at the top. However, if you like it evenly, you should put the wider boards up and let them stand back over your feet. This will make all three floors look identical later.

coloring

The coloring can be done individually with glaze or color. The back of the pallet offers enough space for test coats.

Safety notice for toxins in pallets

Euro pallets are produced for commercial transport and therefore are not subject to the strict conditions of furniture wood production. Accordingly, ingredients for wood or insect protection may be included, which are not suitable for residential use. However, there are also rules and labeling requirements in this case, for which a Euro pallet has three imprints.

EUR - Signs a standardized pallet of the European Pallet Pool.

EPAL - is a quality feature of the Pallet Association e.V. (not mandatory).

ICCP - Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention. There are different markings under the treatment method. MB stands for "fumigation with methyl bromide", HT for "heat treatment" and DB for "debarking". Pallets marked with MB are not suitable for the living space.

Construction manual for a rustic pallet rack with mirror

Pallet rack with mirror

This shelf requires a little more work, but shines in a very special charm. Of course, the surface can of course also remain untreated or be customized with color.

For the flames (also flames) it is recommended to use an almost new and above all light palette. Such models are available in a pallet shop for 10 € to 20 €. But even with these and other small expenses a pallet rack remains a bargain. Our example has cost less than 30 €.

Charges:

  • € 15 - pallet
  • 5 € - mirror (30 cm x 40 cm from the hardware store)
  • 3 € - Mirror mount from the hardware store
  • 4 € - consumption costs (screws, emery cloth, gas for scarfing etc.)

Step 1: Remove the footboards

The footboards of a Euro pallet are sometimes chamfered to facilitate the pickup with the forklift. These bevels, so the beveled edge surfaces, are unfortunately not visible from below. For an interesting look, however, it may be worthwhile to remove the footboards and put them back upside down. However, the footboards must not be damaged during disassembly.

To easily remove them, only a cordless drill or a drill and a metal drill are needed. Drill the nail heads from above with the metal drill until they finally fall off. Then the board can be easily removed. The protruding nail ends on the feet are pulled out for safety reasons with a pair of pliers or completely sunk with a hammer.

When the heads are removed, the board can be raised.

Once all three footboards have been removed, they can be sanded and, above all, deburred for a more attractive appearance. In addition, the three middle feet are removed - they are no longer needed and can be disposed of.

If a special surface finish is required, all boards can additionally be dismantled, sanded and put back together. However, we limit ourselves to deburring the outer footboards and all other edges. The straight surfaces are only slightly ground to minimize the risk of injury from protruding splinters. Finally, the middle board is attached to the lower feet (see picture 3).

2nd step: scalding wood

The scalding of wood is quite simple and requires only a little practice. All you need for this surface treatment is a good heat gun and a blowtorch or other burner. This is guided evenly over the wood with some distance and lightly flames the surface. Depending on the temperature and desired coloration, the distance of the burner and the speed of movement can be adjusted.

tip: Since the back of the palette is not visible later, it is well suited as a practice area.

If the wood has assumed the desired color, it can be additionally oiled, waxed or colorless painted. Then the mirror mounts are screwed on and desired hooks or screws for hanging keys and Co. attached. This would be the rustic pallet rack already finished and could be so decoratively attached to the wall.

Finished pallet rack

Step 3: individually decorate and illuminate the pallet rack

The finished shelf looks especially nice if you decorate it to your own taste or even illuminate it. RGB LED Stripes are now very cheap to buy and can be easily adapted to the room concept or personal mood with a remote control. The installation is very easy due to self-adhesive surfaces and only one power supply is required for the power supply, which is usually included in the delivery. Basic knowledge of electrical or even soldering skills are not required.

Enjoy your individual pallet rack!
