Make a permanent pin board yourself

Temporary attachment of objects made of paper, cardboard and small light ornamental objects is possible by magnets and needles. When making a pin board yourself for needles and thumbtacks, a material must be chosen that can be perforated for a longer period of time without losing its overall stability too quickly.

Advantages and disadvantages of magnetic force

The great advantage of magnetic force is the mechanical integrity of the pin board surface and the pin objects. When making your own magnetic wall, a passive ferrous metal plate can provide support for active magnets. Conversely, the magnetic wall can attract itself and hold any ferrous metal object.

Disadvantages of the magnetic pin boards are:

  • Magnetic pins hide pictures and notes on slips
  • The number is limited to the amount of existing magnetic pins
  • The visual design, appearance and material selection is limited
  • Magnetization can damage smart cards and storage media

Advantages and disadvantages of the pierced pins

The space requirement of a single pin depends on the size of the head. Sewing needles without a head are almost invisible. Conventional pins have small gripping heads which are insignificantly larger than pinheads. When crafting and designing many creative solutions are possible due to the large selection of materials. Most materials are cheap.

Disadvantages of the pin boards with puncture needles are:

  • The objects to be fastened get puncture holes
  • The surface of the pin board is permanently and increasingly perforated
  • The perforation can over time lead to "leaching" of the holding force
  • The material of the pin board begins to crumble and crumble sometime

Properties of the materials for punctures

In general, every pin board, into which needles are stung, always more or less destroyed. The appropriate material must be easy to pierce and provide adequate hold through density. Ideally, it can partially regenerate after being pulled out by at least partially closing the holes by elasticity. The classic basic materials for a pin board are:

  • Cork in plate form or from individual corks
  • Styrofoam plates mounted on a carrier
  • Thick fabrics such as curtains and curtains
  • bast
  • Rubber and rubber-containing plastics
  • Very soft woody plants such as spruce, fir, pine and willow
  • Pressed fibreboards (flax, hemp)

Holding tools and instruments

For magnetic pin walls magnetic foils and magnets are available in various shapes. Iron-containing paints and foils can magnetize non-magnetic surfaces, even on and on objects.

For object attachment to pin boards for grooving, the typical object holders are special pins, sewing pins, pins and thumbtacks. Nails leave too big holes. The thinner the diameter of the puncture holes fails, the more punctures tolerate the pin board and the more it can close individual holes by elasticity again.

With and without frame and material combination

In principle, all wall materials can be fixed on a surface such as a wall without further processing and design. Material combinations such as cork wallpaper on a polystyrene board expand the design possibilities. For visual reasons and because of the simplified suspension option, building a wooden frame yourself is one of the most popular forms of construction when crafting a pinboard.

Use textile fabrics

In order to hide unwanted appearance of the surface, for example of polystyrene, the pin board can be covered with fabric. The needles pierce straight through the fabric vertically in the deposited material, which may also consist of cork or other suitable material.

Also possible is a pinboard construction made of pure textile fabric. Either the depth of the puncture option is created by multiple layers of tissue or puncture is limited to the flat and parallel double stitch. Safety pins can also be used as slides here. They form a kind of eyelets in the attached state, can be hung and plugged into the corresponding objects.

Attachment, installation and placement

Although it is possible to hang pin boards without a frame, cork and polystyrene always run the risk of being torn out. A wooden or metal frame avoids this possibility. If a pin area is surrounded by a frame, three types of attachment are common:

1. In the inner corners of the frame nails or screws are driven through the pinboard filling
2. Hooks are hung or screwed to the frame for suspension
3. At the top two corners, two hooks or eyelets are screwed in and a wire or a string knotted. Thus, the loose suspended pinboard can be aligned slightly horizontally, even later with uneven load

Depending on the purpose of use, the placement is recommended. In family households, it must be considered whether younger and smaller family members also want to use the pin board (timetable, shopping lists). The preferred pin objects also play a role. Small pieces of notes and postcard motifs are best recognized at head height. Larger photos, pictures and illustrations tend to have the most impact on head height.

Tips & Tricks

With tools such as iron-based paint and board varnish, you can design a pin board that combines several attachment options.
