The roof slope from saddle roof

The pitched roof is a widespread in Central Europe and thus also in Germany roof. It is also traditionally the most constructed roof over the centuries. This roof shape combines many advantages and can be adapted to personal requirements very well. One of the most important criteria for this is the angle of inclination of pitched roofs.

The roof truss and the pitch of the roof in pitched roof

First of all, it is also important for the roof pitch which roof structure you decide on. But more points depend on that.

  • Expansion characteristics of the roof
  • Snow or wind load in the respective region
  • allow large dormers
  • use the self-cleaning effect efficiently

Purlin and rafter roof chairs

Depending on the roof truss used, you can use your attic differently. Even the roof pitch angle is only of limited importance up to now. Saddle roofs can basically be built on rafter and purlin roof chairs alike. While the rafter roof derives all weight on the outer walls, the purlin roof requires support posts, which will build over retaining walls and thus additionally derive the weight.

The roof slope from saddle roof: saddle

This leads to completely different possibilities. The rafter roof, which can be particularly steep, results in a large free top floor area. If the floor area is not large, a large room can emerge from the attic without disturbing support beams. This is counteracted by the fact that the pitched roof can be made very steep on a rafter or the further developed canopy roof, which creates additional living space of up to 30 percent.

For this, the purlin roof can also be built very wide, so it is suitable for large floor areas. This allows the pillars to be optimally integrated into walls, providing a sufficiently large floor plan. At the same time, the purlin roof can be made very flat, so that the attic can act almost like a conventional living floor.

Even by the regional building regulations prescribed maximum heights of gables and roofs is not exceeded, but the underlying living space used efficiently. In addition, large dormers can be integrated into the purlin roof, because the rafters do not necessarily have to face each other. The roof truss can also be combined from the various constructions to influence the roof pitch and utility properties of the attic.

Provisions relating to roof pitch

Thus, both roof structures offer also in relation to the required or desired roof pitch influence. Necessary because Germany can be differentiated, among other things, from snow-poor and snowy, but also wind-poor and wind-rich regions. Thereafter, the required roof pitch angle is the saddle roof also.

In addition, you can subdivide saddle roofs even after the roof pitch angle itself.

  • Inclination angle less than or equal to 30 degrees: a flat pitched roof
  • Tilt angle 45 degrees: an angle or new German saddle roof
  • Inclination angle 60 degrees and the shape of an equilateral triangle: Old French or Old-Franconian saddle roof
  • Inclination angle of 62 degrees: gothic or old German saddle roof

The roofing of the saddle roof, taking into account the roof pitch

From the pitch angle of the saddle roof but also depends on which roofing you can use. In addition to the load capacity, which can also be adjusted by the roof truss, it is the self-cleaning effect of the roof, for example by running rainwater, which you have to take into account. In addition, a minimum inclination must be given so that running water can not penetrate into the roof truss. Depending on the roof covering, there are different minimum values, also called control values.

  • 15 to 85 degrees roof pitch: bitumen shingles, however, the design of the shingles must be considered
  • 15 degrees roof pitch: plastic roof panels
  • 22 degrees roof pitch: flat roof tiles
  • from 22 degrees roof pitch: concrete roof tiles
  • 25 degrees roof pitch: slate (old German coverage and double coverage) and FZ panels
  • 30 degree roof pitch: double trough folding tile

Depending on which roof pitch your pitched roof has, you must therefore pay attention to the roofing on suitable material.

Tips & Tricks

With a roof pitch of two to ten degrees is generally spoken of a flat roof. These were very fashionable in the 1960s and 70s. Due to the rapid leak of many such flat roofs, the builders have quickly returned to the classic pitched roof.

Of course you will find in the house journal and other articles around the various roof designs and roof structures. So too [calculating from a roof].
