Plant and cultivate runner beans and bush beans: cultivate

The bean forms a plant species of the butterfly plant and can be easily grown as a crop in the vegetable patch. Hobby gardeners can choose between two growth forms for their own cultivation: the bush or barley bean. The one-year-old broad bean grows as a left-hander on trellises, while the bush bean has a compact habit and is ideal for smaller gardens. Flowering time is from June to September.

The garden bean was by the Association for the conservation of crop diversity (VEN) named Vegetable of the Year 2004. Find out here how to properly plant and care for the garden bean.

Danger: Kidney beans contain toxic lectins, which are destroyed during cooking. Beans should therefore not be consumed raw, otherwise there are strong symptoms of intoxication.

Pole bean or bush bean?

With the beans one distinguishes between two varieties that differ in their characteristics and cultivation methods, So you should already decide in advance whether you are interested in the cultivation of tall or compact bean beans.

bush beans are near-surface growing crops and are ready for harvest approximately three months after sowing. The colors of the different bush beans sleeves vary between green, yellow and violet shades. In cultivation and in care, the bush beans differ only slightly from the runner beans. Their advantage is that they need no scaffolding for a healthy plant growth in the bed and flourish well in the bucket.

runner beans have been cultivated in Europe since the 16th century and grow at the ideal location up to four meters high. The useful plant winds around columns in a counterclockwise direction. Here fences, taut ropes or sturdy wooden sticks serve as an ideal climbing aid.

That's how the bean gets used for natural wall greening and is suitable as a green screen with useful factor. The bean grows very fast and can be harvested early, so the trellises are only a short time an ugly sight and are quickly appealing green. In addition, the colorful butterfly blossoms make a beautiful eye-catcher in the summer garden. The flat or round pods can be yellow, blue, green or even black and also the seeds are shaped differently.

Claims and location of the kidney bean

Bush beans grow close to the ground and do not need a climbing aid.

Beans prefer one for healthy growth sunny location in a sheltered corner in the garden. It is important that the crops are not shaded by hedges or tall perennials. Especially runner beans need a sufficient wind protection, so as not to be heavily loaded in bad weather. Bush beans are more frugal in this respect, because they offer the wind less attack surface.

beans Many form long roots and therefore require a deep and nutritious substrate for high crop yield. Ordinary garden soil can be treated with well-rotted compost, thus providing all the nutrients that annual bean beans need in the growth phase.

Beans can also thrive in the tub. Here should be resorted to a sufficiently deep vessel in which the beans have enough space for healthy rooting. Pole beans also need a climbing aid and serve as a natural screen on the balcony.

Plant beans

Runner beans need a climbing aid for optimal growth.

If the ideal location is found, the bean seeds can be seeded from May. It is important that no more ground frosts threaten and the soil is sufficiently warm. Experts recommend waiting until the bottom has 10° C, that is mostly after the icy saints, So in late May applicable. The bean seeds can also be spread without problems in July.

The seeds are approx. 3 centimeters deep into the earth and easily covered with sand or substrate. Finally, if you keep a 10-15 centimeter planting distance between the individual beans in the bed, you will make the subsequent harvest easier. When the seeds begin to germinate, you can pile some substrate around the small plants. This measure provides stability and provides additional protection.

tip: You can already prefer horticultural seeds indoors on a sunny windowsill in a flower pot with moist soil. Early seedlings grow faster and are more resistant to germs and pathogens.

Trellis for runner beans

Tensioned cords can also serve as a climbing aid for the bean.

Runner beans grow quickly and need to be used outdoors from day one a climbing aid for healthy growth. Already before the planting of the seeds you should attach a climbing aid in the bed. Here so-called pole tents have been proven. Simply insert five or more wooden sticks into the ground and attach all the tips with a sturdy band, as shown in our introductory intro image.

Also single tendrils, strained ropes or a grid in front of a warm wall, the left-handers serve as a practical climbing aid.

When placing single poles, choose up to 2.5 meter long specimens and dig them 50 centimeters deep into the bed to ensure a secure footing. From a height of 2 meters the crop is made unnecessarily difficult, therefore, even with very high-growing specimens, this bar height is completely sufficient. Around each of these five sticks, you can now place up to six bean seeds or seedlings in the ground as described above.

tip: If you a trellis as a climbing aid choose, you can control the growth habit of your beans well and achieve a complete greening.

Carefully cultivate kidney beans

For a rich harvest, the bean plant should be regularly supplied with organic fertilizer.

There are the right locations in the care of the bean only a little to pay attention. Rainwater tolerates them just as well as tap water, whereby attention should be paid to the lowest possible lime content. Before germination, the substrate is kept moist but poured only moderately. After germination, the water is more abundant. However, make sure that it does not come to unhealthy waterlogging.

If the substrate has already been prepared for planting with organic fertilizer, it is sufficient a regular undermining of compost in the upper earth area around the plant base. As additional nutrients, wood ash, bone meal or special liquid fertilizer can be given every three weeks. This optimizes fruiting and promotes general plant growth.

Runner beans grow very high, Bush beans can become very sweeping. It is generally not necessary to cut beans. Nevertheless, cutting measures can be useful if shoots are unfavorable or too involved. Remove such shoots before winter, so that the plant can invest its power in healthy and strong shoots. Of course, all shoots that show signs of illness are also removed.

Diseases and pests

Beans also thrive in the tub and are better protected against pests here. In winter, these plants need to be indoors.

Beans form many leaves and are thus often affected by fungal diseases, because flying fungal spores easily adhere to moist leaves and reproduce abruptly. In case of fungal attack, all affected parts of the plant are radically cut off and disposed of with household waste, as fungal spores in the soil or compost can last for several years.

Also particularly troublesome are aphids and the so-called bean fly. Here are above all Young plants that were not preferred in the house, very vulnerable. The maggots of the fly eat the roots and leaves of the bean, whereupon the plant stunted or only poorly thrives. The natural barrier is strongly scented plants such as tagetes, chamomile or tomatoes.

tip: One regular controll provides better treatment success.

Bean rust on runner beans

Damage of the bean rust on leaves and stems.

At runner beans can in the summer the unpleasant bean rust occur. If infested, yellow-brown spots with slight curvature form on the upper side of the leaves. Whitish pustules develop on the undersides of the leaves, turning brown-black over time.

The bean grate occurs mainly on runner beans, rarer on bush beans on. A stronger infestation can weaken the plants. The fungus survives both on the remaining plant residues in the soil as well as on climbing aids.

If the runner beans were already sick, You should first change the cultivated area to prevent re-infestation and thoroughly clean the trellises. Recommended are benzoic acid-based remedies. A good alternative to the sticks is the feeding of the beans on strings. In addition, infested plant parts should be promptly removed and disposed of with household waste.

Harvest beans

Raw beans are poisonous. For further processing, the ends are removed.

Beans are harvested about three months after sowing and can be harvested in good weather at the end of July. You can recognize a ripe bean by a simple test: break a bean in the middle and inspect the inside - if it is green and juicy and the break is smooth, the bean is ripe and can be processed further.

Raw beans are toxic to humans! Beans are always heated before consumption to destroy the harmful phasin.

The bean pods are not cut off, but slightly turned off at the base or clicked off. Often it can then be harvested once more in autumn.
