Preparing for the winter: clean and seal the gutter

The gutter cleaning is a typical autumn work: When most of the leaves have fallen from the trees, it is time to remove the dirt from the rainwater system and to check the individual elements for leaks. This is the only way to avoid costly consequential damage caused by frost and rainwater flowing down the façade.

That's why you should clean and seal your gutter in the fall

Regular gutter cleaning ensures proper roof drainage. Clogged downpipes and gutters, on the other hand, quickly overflow the water, then it looks for new ways, further damage is inevitable.

Frost threatens new disaster: dammed water freezes and can burst the pipes. Through cracks and holes, the water thaws out to the next thaw and leaves its mark on the facade or even penetrates into the building envelope.

It is best to install a leaf trap in front of the downpipe, which you must subsequently empty regularly, but which protects your drainage system against blockage. An alternative is the Japanese gutter.

Effective cleaning of the gutter: how it works!

The gutter cleaning is actually no guidance required, because it simply climbs with garden gloves armed on the roof and fishes the dirt from the drainage system. Then it is again swept. But it is easier:

  • Shovel the gutter with a half-plastic bottle, the spout missing. This fits the shape very well to the rounded surface.
  • Then perforate the bottom of the halved bottle and use it as a filter for the downpipe.
  • Rinse the gutter with the hose and drain the dirty water through the bottle strainer. In between empty the dirt!
  • Pay attention to possible gutter leaks during flushing: If the water flows out in the wrong places, you should carry out sealing work after cleaning.

These options for sealing gutters exist

Gutter seal with silicone

If you only see small holes or cracks in your gutter, you can use solvent-free silicone for sealing. For this you need a silicone syringe, which you can fill with appropriate cartridges.

  • Thoroughly clean and dry damaged areas
  • Cut off the nozzle of the cartridge at an angle with the cutter
  • Apply silicone generously to the affected areas
  • Dip fingers in soapy water and smooth silicone thoroughly

Seal gutter with special sealant

For the gutter repair, special viscous sealants are available, which can be processed in much the same way as putty. The use of these substances is relatively easy, up to 1 cm wide holes can be sealed with it.

  • Thoroughly clean and dry damaged areas
  • Remove the sealant with the spatula and fill up
  • Smooth out filled areas thoroughly
  • Allow to dry for several hours (observe weather conditions before)

Most sealants of this type are suitable for all common guttering materials such as aluminum, zinc, copper and plastic, just read the instructions for use.

Seal the gutter with sealing strips

Have there been any long cracks on your gutter? To seal such damage, sealing tapes are particularly well suited, they consist of a combination of aluminum, plastic and bitumen. They can be used to repair both plastic and metal gutters.

  • Thoroughly clean and dry damaged areas
  • Heat the sealing tape with the hair dryer to make it more malleable
  • Glue sealing tape from the outside onto the gutter and press firmly

Applying sealing tapes is the fastest and easiest way to seal gutters and downspouts. To prevent further damage, ensure that you thoroughly clean them regularly.
