The prices of acrylic glass

At first glance, acrylic glass is anything but cheap. Especially in comparison with similar plastics, acrylic glass often appears extremely expensive. But there is more in acrylic glass. Therefore, below, more about the prices of acrylic glass.

Translucent than glass

The most striking feature of acrylic glass is probably the high light transmission. At 92 percent this is even significantly higher than the translucency of glass. Double glazing, for example, accounts for more than 80 percent, single-piece, expensive floating glass 90 percent, acrylic for 92 percent. More under "Acrylic glass versus glass". In addition, the UV radiation permeability in the production can be influenced.

This results in many applications

In the past, greenhouses had to be built for lack of real glass alternatives. But the greenhouse made of acrylic glass is not only attractive because of the lighter construction or the better price. Above all, it is the other properties, such as longevity or the aforementioned UV permeability, that make it even better than real glass.

Other transparent plastics

Compared to other plastics, however, it is clear to many consumers that acrylic glass construction materials are significantly more expensive than other, apparently comparable, plastic products. In particular compared to the following plastics, the cost difference is quickly noticeable:

  • Polycarbonate (PC)
  • epoxy resin
  • Polyetherimide (PEI)
  • Polyethylene (PE) translucent
  • Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
  • Polymethylpentene (PMP)
  • Polyoxymethylene (POM) partially transparent
  • Polystyrene (PS)
  • Polysulfone (PSU)

Plastics used by do-it-yourselfers and builders (transparent)

Do-it-yourselfers and the construction trade mainly use the following plastics, as further material properties are decisive:

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Polystyrene (PS)
  • Polyphenylene ether (PPO)
  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Polycarbonate (PC)
  • Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

or acrylic glass

It clearly shows that, especially in areas where acrylic glass can be used as a roofing for example, the common alternatives such as PVC or PC are significantly cheaper. However, it is the properties that make other plastics perform worse. This makes acrylic glass one of the coveted plastics. The price, in turn, is determined by two fundamental factors: the cost of production and the demand. Both are high in PMMA, so it also leads to a corresponding price level.

The bottom line is that PMMA is extremely cheap

If, however, the acquisition costs are based on its extreme resistance and longevity, it is considered how often identical or similar constructions with other plastics have to be renewed and constructions made of acrylic glass survive these with ease. This means that the acquisition costs will remain unique for many construction projects over a long period of time, which means that the bottom line acrylic glass is even cheaper than other plastics. After all, it does not have to be renewed too often.

Another price difference between different acrylic glass manufacturers

Another and very significant price difference is also the products of different manufacturers. These can be differentiated into no-name manufacturers, average and extremely popular manufacturers. When Plexiglas (code name for acrylic glass Evonik Röhm GmbH) is added that since the 1930s it is the first production-ready acrylic glass, which was unrivaled for a long time. In addition, it is of very high quality and can be produced with numerous other attributes (light transmission, UV radiation, colors, fluorescent, surface texture).

Special acrylic glass products change the price as well

In particular, acrylic glass parts that are provided with fluorescent colors, reflect the higher material and manufacturing costs significantly. Nevertheless, the price (starting from the usual market price) should not really be questioned, especially with branded products. There are factors such as the high product quality or above-average guarantees that make these products not so popular for nothing.
