Clean wood joints with wooden dowels

Wooden joints with wooden dowels are easy to implement and are standard in furniture making, which is why they are used by home improvement workers as well as carpenters and carpenters. While the professionals have appropriate equipment to drill perfect dowel holes, this often causes some home improvement difficulties.

Anyone attempting to drill precisely aligned dowel holes with a drill will only receive flush and straight connections in rare cases. The result is inclined or aligned holes, as a result, the dowels do not fit exactly. Therefore, as an aid often screws, angle connectors and nails are used, which are much more expensive than wooden dowels. These provisional solutions are not necessary because these special dowels are glued to the wood and create very stable wood connections.

Remedy is a dowel help, for example, the dowel master of Wolfcraft. With this small and inexpensive device you can easily and precisely set new dowel holes for form-fitting wood connections. It has an integrated angle stop, a centering pin, guide bushes and steel bushings and is suitable for working with wood thicknesses of up to 30 mm.

The dowel aid is easy to operate: set the depth of the dowel hole, put the master dabber laterally on the outer edge of the board and put in the correct position. Now you can drill a centered, clean dowel hole.

If the wood connection is in the middle of the board, adjust the lateral distance to the edge. After drilling with a stop, you will get a precise hole for pegging the boards together.

The dowel strip is suitable for wooden dowels with a diameter of 6, 8 and 10 mm. However, it is advisable to glue the dowels - except for dismantled furniture. In the case of a dowel joint without gluing, long and thick dowels should be used, as a clamping connection offers less stability than a firm and elastic gluing.

Overview of different wood connections

Worktop connection
Worktop connections to extend or create a corner joint must be carried out carefully. Important here is the safe joining with worktop connectors or solid wood connectors. We show how this connection is executed.

butt joint
A butt joint is the simplest way of connecting two pieces of wood together. With nails, screws or wood dowels, the parts of the workpiece are firmly joined together.

miter
For an elegant, right-angled miter joint, the two wooden parts to be joined are beveled at a 45-degree angle and glued together. For added stability, wooden dowels can provide.

halving
During the overlap, the two pieces of wood are processed at the junction to about half their thickness and connected together. No additional reinforcement is required because the contact area for the glue is particularly large.

Slot and pin
A particularly stable wood connection is the connection with slot and pin. A workpiece contains a slot into which the pin of a second piece of wood is pushed. The pin is firmly enclosed in this way from at least three sides.

galvanization
One of the most elaborate, but also the most stable wood joints is zincing. By the tines the sum of the contact surfaces is particularly large. The most sophisticated variant is dovetail zincation, in which the tines are firmly interlocked by their trapezoidal shape.

Tongue and groove
In the case of a tongue and groove connection, there is not just one but three contact surfaces for the spring for each workpiece. This makes the connection particularly stable and the use of additional connecting means unnecessary.
