Build a raised bed: building instructions for a raised bed: building

We help to build a raised bed. For which hobby gardener does not know it? One cultivates the beautifully laid out bed, spends a long time kneeling or in a stooped posture and has correspondingly severe pain in the evening. A much more convenient solution is the back-friendly raised bed, which is often used in natural horticulture.

Raised beds are found especially where you need a space-saving and easy-to-implement alternative to extensive bedding in large gardens. Balconies, terraces and small gardens are more and more common in the center of the city, because the topic "Urban Garden" is a big trend. Small backyards and lawns are thus used and ornamental gardens.

In the following instructions, we explain how to create a raised bed yourself.

Advantages of a raised bed

In a raised bed, only a few weeds grow between the plants, as the main seed flight takes place on the ground. In addition, pests, such as snails, fox tapeworms or voles, very difficult to get into the raised bed. Thus, raised beds provide good protection against unwanted intruders.

The additional attachment of a cover, it can also be used as a cold frame. Then you can start planting as early as February. In addition, it can be used not only as a flower or vegetable bed, but optionally also use as a composter.

The material, the size, shape and color can be adapted to the needs and wishes of the hobby gardener. As a rule, raised beds are so large that on both sides all areas can be easily reached. The often made of concrete blocks or wood boxes ensure by the stratification of the soil a non-confused fauna - which is not the case with conventional horticulture.

Material and tools

  • Larch wood boards, about 20-30 mm thick
  • Larch wood posts approx. 70 x 70 mm
  • Fine wire mesh (rabbit wire)
  • Plastic film (PE)
  • Possibly. Gravel or post anchor
  • spade
  • Assembly adhesive or screws
  • Possibly. Cordless Screwdriver
  • Jigsaw or circular saw
  • clamps
  • tacker
  • Rough tree and shrub cut
  • Foliage and green waste
  • garden soil
  • Ripe compost
  • Potting soil / Mother Earth

High beds themselves build step by step

With a few pegs and a string, the position of the raised bed is staked out. You can once again check the light and the orientation.

The spade is then used to lift the soil about 20 to 30 cm deep.

The construction of a raised bed is not too difficult. In the simplest form, it is only a box made of wood, plastic plates or corrugated iron. In our manual, we build a construction of larch wood. This type of wood is easy to work with and the necessary tools should normally be available in a home improvement household.

Larch is one of the naturally very weather-resistant woods. However, it is also very hard what you should consider when choosing saw blades and drills. Douglas fir is also an alternative. On the other hand, woods treated with weather protection should not be used as the coating's ingredients may migrate into the potting soil over time.

Determine dimensions of the raised bed

When you build your first raised bed yourself, it should not be too long and too wide, because the construction then has to be stabilized more complex - after all, the filling later has a certain weight and can push the walls to the outside. Nevertheless, of course, should be enough space to grow various herbs, vegetables or fruits. A size of about 150 x 50 cm footprint has proven to be a good average. The height of 50 cm is sufficient to use most of the advantages of a raised bed. If you want a little more comfort, you can also build up to about 80 cm in height. But then the bed must not be too wide, so you can still comfortably reach the center of the planting area.

Create mine

If you lift the soil under the raised bed about 20 to 30 cm deep, you have more space for the filling. This pit is dug in the first step. Lay the pit so that the raised bed runs in a north-south direction, then the sun is best exploited. The dimensions are set off with four sticks, marked the boundaries with a string and then stabs initially possibly existing at the site grass. The sods are lifted out and put aside. Then you dig with the spade to the desired depth.

Build wooden frame

Carefully align the individual boards horizontally before screwing them on. Then they meet at the corners exactly angled against each other and the entire construction looks neater.

Post caps are a contribution to structural wood protection. They are available to match various post sections and are simply screwed in from the side.

Cut the required amount of wood to length. You need boards for two 150 cm long side walls and two transverse walls. The transverse walls measure 50 cm plus twice the post width - in other words, with a 7 cm post, this is 64 cm. Depending on what board widths you get at your timber or hardware store, put the walls together out of three, four or more boards. Stay flexible in height: a few more centimeters are not tragic, you do not have to cut boards lengthwise to width, to exactly reach the desired height. The raised bed is stabilized with six posts: one comes out to the corners, one each outside in the middle of the long sides. In the simplest case, each lift a narrow hole for the posts and put them there in a gravel pile. You do not have to base the construction on frost, but it has to be somewhat tip-proof - 30 to 40 cm deep you should dig the post holes. Alternatively, use post anchors made of metal, which are hitting directly into the ground. By the way: Remember the constructive wood protection. Cut the posts at an angle or place metal post caps to prevent rainwater from standing on the end grain surfaces.

Now the boards are attached. In the classical method you fix them first provisionally with screw clamps and then screwed them to the post. The longitudinal boards are bolted to the inside, the cross boards on the outside of the posts. The transverse and longitudinal boards are not connected to each other, they merely butt together. If you have hard woods, such as larch, be sure to drill the screw holes, otherwise the wood may splinter or crack.

An alternative method is to build the raised bed using assembly adhesive. The adhesive must be suitable for the outside. Attach it to the boards at the connection points, press them in and fix the adhesive until they harden with screw clamps. Gluing takes a little more time, but saves the pre-drilling of numerous holes and screwing in the screws. Attention: On very oily woods, such as teak, adhesives usually hold only badly.

Small animal and wet protection

So that no animals, such as voles or other pests, can penetrate from below, the bottom of the pit is laid out with fine wire mesh. Pull the wire up the inside of the wooden walls and tack over it.

In addition, durable woods should be protected from direct moisture to extend their life by a few years. For this purpose you can line the inside of the raised bed with plastic foil. Well suited, for example, is a not too heavy pond liner made of polyethylene (PE), which is also stapled to the wood.

The intrusion of vole mice is prevented with fine-meshed wire mesh on the bottom of the pit. It is pulled up a bit on the sides and stapled to the wood inside.

So that the wood is less burdened by the earth's moisture, you can line the raised bed with pond liner. It should end just above the earth-touched area and will also be tacked on.

Fill the raised bed

When you build your raised bed in the fall, you will usually find everything in the garden that you need for the stuffing. It consists of several layers: As first location At a height of about 30 cm thick and roughly cut branches and branches of trees and shrubs in the pit. Slightly pinch this layer. Although it should have cavities, but the other fillers should not fall into larger quantities.

The second location consists of leaves and coarse green waste. Do not use a pure grass clippings here, as it gets too tight and then tends to rot. But you can mix a little grass cut under the coarser materials.

When third location Fill garden soil, which is still present from the excavation of the pit and can be usefully used here. The fourth location consists of mature compost, the ffirst layer Finally, from high quality potting soil.

With this construction material rots in the raised bed for several years, supplying nutrients and generating heat. After six to seven years, you should completely clear the raised bed and refill.

Plant raised bed

Strong-consuming plants find ideal conditions in the first two years. After that, more frugal plants still thrive excellently - these magnificent lettuce heads show it.

If you have built your raised bed in the autumn, it is ready to be planted in the spring. You can sow in it, but also put forward young plants. If you build a suitable cover, such as a lath frame covered with transparent foil, then the raised bed is also suitable as a cold frame. Most of the nutrients are contained in the raised bed in the first two years. Then it offers optimal conditions for tomatoes or leeks. In the following years, a few frugal plants, such as lettuce, still have a rich supply of nutrients. Also pay attention to the decreasing amount of nutrients when planting flowers
