A raised bed itself build from wood

Raised beds can be built from different materials. This includes wood. However, the raised bed made of wood must meet some conditions, if the joy of it is to last long. In the following article we will show you how to build a raised bed yourself from wood.

The wood must not come into contact with the soil

First of all, wood does not develop well in direct contact with the soil - it starts to rot. Even if you use pressure impregnated wood, this is not adequately protected. For this you have to consider two areas where the wood could come in contact with the soil:

  • on the ground
  • by filling with soil

Protect the wood from filling

The filling is the least problem. Because you simply propose the wooden raised bed with a suitable foil, such as a pond liner. It is durable and does not rot. To protect the wood bed on the ground, it is a bit more expensive. Here are again different approaches to:

  • wall a wall
  • pour a high foundation
  • Put metal shoes with point foundations and fix wooden stands in them
  • Use metal stands and fix them in the ground

One point must be clear: if the raised bed is to remain "mobile", so if you want to put it somewhere else, you can not get around that the lower part of wood touches the ground. This significantly affects the life of the wood in this area.

Protection against ground wetness

The best solution is with a small wall base. In the wall base then the stands are edged. Either the metal shoes, in which then the wooden posts are mounted - or you attach metal stand in the wall base. If the posts are to be inside, you can set the dimensions so that the later wooden planking does not touch the masonry (if it easily protrudes.

Boiler pressure impregnation alone is not sufficient

Nevertheless, the wood itself should be very well protected. A boiler pressure impregnation is not bad, but by far not enough. Of course you have often seen old boiler pressure impregnated wood. Particularly in the 1990s, pressure impregnated palisades were very popular, which were put directly into the soil.

Protection against UV radiation and against pests

Below the surface, the wood rots massively, while the visible part is often very gray. This is because the boiler pressure impregnation alone does not necessarily mean a UV protection. Over the years, this then destroys the lignin in the wood - it turns gray and pale. You have to protect the wood in any case - against pests, fungi and of course against the UV radiation of the sun and moisture.

Attention when growing vegetables

But you have to take into account what is being grown in the raised bed. In particular, if you want to grow vegetables for consumption, you must put special emphasis on the fact that no toxins can get into the soil.

The optimal dimensions of your wooden high bed

Only the dimensions remained. If you want to work comfortably while standing on a raised bed, the height should be similar to that of a kitchen worktop. This will give you a height of about 0.90 to 1.00 m. In order to sit comfortably on a raised bed, a height of 60 cm should not be exceeded.

The maximum width of the raised bed

Of course, a raised bed should not be too wide. You have to be able to reach the center comfortably from both sides without having to climb into the raised bed. Then you come to a maximum width of 1.20 to 1.30 m. Also consider the location. Only a few plants will thrive on the shady north side. In addition, the raised bed freezes quickly. In the blazing sun, however, it dries out relatively quickly, so it needs a lot of water and frequent watering.
