About the ratio of bolt cutter to padlock

The bolt cutter is a natural enemy of a padlock. Commercially available bolt cutters develop cutting force up to almost five tons. It is difficult to protect a padlock and its hanger. Special alloys can withstand this cutting pressure, but are more priced in space technology.

Only expensive special locks resist the cutting force

A bolt cutter is able to easily cut through the stirrups of almost all padlocks. For the highest-quality locks with the highest resistance, the manufacturers use a combination of the strength of the bracket and special alloys produced by special hardening processes. The top products withstand a cutting pressure of up to six tons, which exceeds the printing performance of commercially available "handy" bolt cutters.

As a further precaution against the unauthorized and unwanted opening of a padlock with a bolt cutter minimizing the attack surface is used. Only if the two cutting edges of the bolt cutter can completely cover the lock bracket, the required force can act.

Padlocks of the highest security level have brackets protected by cladding or housing. The achievable attack surface can be too narrow for the attachment of the pliers wing, depending on the mounting. Rectangular and round housing forms like the so-called discussion lock fulfill this function.

Construction of the bolt cutter

The bolt cutters available in materials trading have handle lengths of up to one meter. The longer the grips are, the stronger the leverage effect and increases the cutting pressure. The head pliers usually consist of two straight blades. For special tasks also curved pliers wings can be selected.

Structure of the padlock

In a conventional padlock the seated in reverse U-shape on the housing spring-mounted bracket is inserted and locked. A bolt cutter can be easily attached to the side. The commercial maximum thicknesses of these straps are eight millimeters.

For security locks with shortened visible stirrup, the stirrup profile is integrated into the housing in a laterally sliding profile. The temple thicknesses are up to ten millimeters. Padlocks that resist a bolt cutter cost upwards of one hundred euros.

Tips & Tricks

When using a padlock, always remember that an unauthorized person always uses the weakest link when using a bolt cutter. The strongest lock uses little if the eyelets of the bracket are made of sheet metal or a chain does not bring the same resistance.
