Reinforcing mesh for leveling compound

Reinforcing mesh can also be used in the floor area in conjunction with leveling compound. How you proceed with a reinforcement fabric for leveling compound, we have summarized below for you.

Mending the floor

A floor area can be repaired or compensated differently:

  • screed
  • Leveling compound (based on cement or gypsum)

Repair the floor with leveling compound

The handling of the leveling compound is easier for many users, because it is in principle to flow screed, with which he floor leveling can be exactly. On solid ground, it is no longer necessary to reinforce the screed or leveling compound with a reinforcing fabric.

Leveling compound with reinforcing fabric on old wooden floor

However, if it is a non-static solid ground, for example, easily yielding or bending, the use of reinforcing mesh is recommended. The typical example of when a reinforcing fabric is used for the leveling compound is an old wood floor. However, further preparatory work has to be done.

Preliminary work: attach wooden floorboards, prevent sound bridges

First, the old wooden floorboards must be firmly connected to the ground. These are, if necessary, screwed again. The wooden floor must be as low-vibration as possible. Then big butt joints are filled with a suitable agent we silicone. Under no circumstances should the leveling compound enter these joints, as this could create sound bridges.

Measures against traction and stress cracks

In addition, a separating tape must be inserted along the walls as with any wall connection. It is imperative to prevent a frictional connection between the walls and the leveling compound, as otherwise stress cracks could soon occur. If necessary, the wooden surface must be pretreated with a suitable primer.

The laying of the reinforcement fabric

For the reinforcement fabric, make sure that this fabric is alkali resistant. Now this reinforcing fabric is laid on the floor. It is laid overlapping by about 10 cm. In the meantime, you can clamp and fix the reinforcement fabric to the floor with a stapler so that it can not slip during leveling.

Leveling with the leveling compound

Now the balancing mass is applied. They start at the lowest point. Either the mass is first combed or immediately smoothed depending on the consistency. The layer thickness is highly dependent on the individual requirements and the specifications of the manufacturer of the leveling compound. Nevertheless, the layer thickness of the leveling compound with reinforcing mesh should be at least 10 mm in most cases.

Tips & Tricks

Please note that the reinforcement fabric is inserted differently with the balancing compound than with other uses. If, for example, you want to apply a reinforcement fabric to interior plaster or for similar projects, the fabric is usually laid in the upper third of the entire layer thickness. When working with the leveling compound on the ground, the reinforcing fabric is applied first.
