Reinforcement of the facade

When working on the facade, a reinforcement is used again and again. When a reinforcement of the facade is required, what they can not and further basic information you will learn afterwards.

Different possibilities of reinforcement

First of all, a differentiation has to be made in the use of reinforcements according to their structure and the existing materials, since reinforcements can have completely different properties:

  • Reinforcement mortar, possibly reinforced with reinforcing fibers
  • Plasters and mortars combined with reinforcing fabrics
  • special adhesive and reinforcement plasters (for ETICS)

A reinforcement does not help here

To rule out incorrect application of reinforcements, not just when working on a facade, first problems or causes where reinforcements do not solve problems. These include mainly construction-related causes such as the bending of ceilings and joists, but also thermal, creep and shrinkage deformations on load-bearing structural parts.

Distinctions of the reinforcement on the facade: plaster base and plaster reinforcement

In addition, a distinction must be made when using reinforcements as plaster base and as plaster reinforcement. A reinforcement of the plaster base for a facade is there to ensure that the later plaster layers adhere well.

Therefore, here Reinforcement mats are used, which have a high inherent rigidity, so for example metal mats. However, depending on the cleaning system used, it is essential to observe the manufacturer's instructions for use. In general, the reinforcement must be matched with the other building materials such as the plaster.

Materials for plaster reinforcement

As reinforcement or Putzarmierung a softer tissue is to be used. Mainly a distinction is made between plastic and glass fiber reinforcements. With the "fabric reinforcement" is usually meant a Glasfaserarmierung. In many areas, the glass fiber reinforcement has replaced the reinforcement with plastic mats. Nevertheless, they are still justified.

Processing of the reinforcement as facade plaster reinforcement

The reinforcement is to be incorporated as close to the surface as possible. As a rule of thumb, the reinforcement is placed in the upper third of the appropriate mortar or plaster layer. The processing takes place wet in wet (the application of the first two-thirds of the mortar layer, the insertion of the reinforcement, then immediately the application of the last third of plaster or mortar).

Use of reinforcing mortar on facades with ETICS

Reinforcing fabrics are used for different tasks on a facade. First, there would be the thermal insulation of the facade with a thermal insulation composite system ETICS). In most cases, EPS panels are used, which are glued to the facade. For this purpose, a special adhesive and reinforcing mortar is used.

This dissolves the EPS panels slightly and thus combines for a very firm hold. At the same time, this reinforcing mortar absorbs vibrations or thermal changes and distributes them over a large area. What it looks like when using adhesive and reinforcing mortar as finishing plaster, you can read here.

Fassadenarmierung at risk of cracking due to various causes

In addition, reinforcements are made on facades if a (load-bearing) old plaster is present, but which is susceptible to cracking. Even with different masonry, for example brick and lightweight concrete, reinforcement of the façade significantly reduces the risk of cracking. However, it should always be kept in mind that the risk of cracking can never be completely neutralized.
