Roller shutter materials in comparison

Roller shutter armor is available in different versions. There are also different materials used. What advantages and disadvantages the individual materials have in the case of the roller shutter can be fully understood in this article.

used material

The following materials are used for the slats (bars) of the roller shutter armor:

  • plastics
  • aluminum
  • Foamed aluminum
  • stole
  • stainless steel
  • Wood (mostly pine wood)

Profile shapes for the individual materials

Profiles at the bars are almost always double-walled. The only exception is the single-walled aluminum profiles, which are rarely seen in practice. The wooden profiles, which are also less common, are single-walled.
The profiles are secured with so-called locking clips or pins against lateral displacement. The shape and size of the staples and pins also depends on the material used for the rods.

They are mainly found in the most cost-effective shutters. As a rule, rigid PVC is used here.

Advantages and disadvantages

Of particular advantage here are the favorable price, the high thermal insulation capacity (higher than for all other materials) and the easy cleaning and easy care.
However, they are also very flexible and offer no burglary protection. In addition, they can warp by massive heat and are less weather resistant than rods made of metal.

Aluminum rods are usually extruded. The lighter roll-pressed profiles usually have to be foamed because of the small wall thickness. Inside the profile can either PVC inserts lie, sometimes they are also hollow.

Advantages and disadvantages

Aluminum tanks are more expensive and significantly heavier than plastic armor, but also offer a good burglar resistance, if the shutter is fastened accordingly (solid rails). Aluminum is far weather-resistant than hard PVC, and also resistant to bending.

Foamed aluminum

Roll-pressed aluminum bars can also be foamed with polyurethane. They are slightly lighter than the extruded variants because of the smaller wall thickness. Because of the foaming they are much more soundproof than other materials.
A better thermal insulation does not result from foamed profiles, however, since the insulating effect is almost negligible anyway. In addition, plastics such as rigid PVC are also highly heat-insulating.

  • stole
With steel tanks, the weight and the price are especially remarkable. They are definitely the most burglar-proof variant, but rails and anti-lift protection must be adapted accordingly.
Because of the high price, however, they are usually only displayed in heavily burglary-prone windows.
  • stainless steel
Stainless steel is slightly better weather-resistant and (also optically) higher-quality than steel. Accordingly, the price is higher. Otherwise, they usually have the same application as roller shutters made of ordinary steel.
  • Wood
Wooden roller shutters are usually made of hard and sturdy pine wood. These roller shutter armor are stable and well burglar resistant, but also correspondingly expensive and comparatively rare.
A special form represents the historical, faithful models, which are mostly used in the field of monument protection.

Because of the differently structured rolling mechanics (chaining together) there are no light slots in wood roller shutters. Since wood has a comparatively favorable ecological balance, it can be considered as a very ecological alternative.
