The roof gable

The gable is one of the oldest architectural elements in building construction. Especially in earlier centuries, the gable was lavishly decorated and adorned, while today it is rather a factual and technical part of the building.

The exact gable determination

It is not always easy for everyone to explain exactly what the gable is actually. Especially when keywords such as verge, ridge or ridge wall fall. Therefore, let us first enumerate the components of a building, to which the gable belongs.

  • First wall
  • gable
  • verge
  • First or roof ridge

The ridge wall is in principle the entire façade wall on a saddle or gable roof. Often, however, this means the area of the wall surface which is located in the roof area, ie forms a triangle. This is the roof gable.

The roof gable: roof

The gable wall

While the lower cross-connection on the façade wall is "thought" there, where the sloping roof structure attaches, the gable is bounded above by the verge. The verge in turn is the line from the lower end of the roof, the eaves, up to the converging roof end of the two roof surfaces, the ridge or roof ridge.

Different gable shapes

Now look at the final ridge wall in a house with a crippled roof, the gable does not form a gable triangle, but a trapeze. A hipped roof, which in turn reaches to the eaves, has no gable. On the other hand, houses can also have a gable that, from a technical point of view, has no gable at all. Therefore below some gable shapes.

  • Pointed gable (saddle roof)
  • Trapezoid gable (cripple whale roof)
  • Round or arched gable (barrel and arched roof)
  • Segment gable (bow, barrel and other roof forms)
  • Low gable (pent roof)
  • Knick gable
  • Fake or glare gable
  • battlements gable
  • Stair gable (stepped or stepped gable)

Special gables

There are also gables that can not be found on the actual gable wall, but on the long side of the house. In particular, if extensions or stems (risalit) were carried out here. These gables running transversely to the actual gable become, according to the transverse circumstance also called Zwerchgiebel.

Captain and Friesengiebel

In the case of a centrally mounted risalit, the term "captain's gable" or "frontispiece" is common, as is the frieze gable, whose roof surfaces are completely connected to the captain's gable and pulled into the main roof, ie to the eaves of the main roof. As a result, the captain's gable has eaves and throats, but the frieze gable has only throats.

The gable on the pent roof

In a pent roof there is also a gable. This is located on the façade side, where the pent roof reaches its peak. The imaginary line from the opposite, deeper eaves (the roof is inclined, so no flat roof!) Forms the lower end of this low gable.

Exceptional and special gables

The stepped gable is in turn a form of gable, which, like the gable, is to be found between a technically necessary and a pure gable, since the steps or pinnacles can usually extend beyond the verge and even the ridge of the roof.

Gable in the modern building philosophy

Today, the pediment is mostly limited to its need for crippled, saddle and other roofs that require a gable. This eliminates the gable decoration as well as the decorating.

Today important aspects to the gable

For many homeowners the proper insulation of the gable according to the energy laws is much more important. Properly done, the wall increases in strength so much that the verge usually has to be moved further outwards. This in turn is often associated with a considerable technical effort.

Gables on old buildings

Otherwise, the gable in terms of ornaments and gable decoration is of great importance only for corresponding old buildings - especially if it is listed buildings.

Tips & Tricks

The term "gable" can also be of importance in a house that has no gable at all. When it comes to determining the position of a house, whether it is with the longitudinal or narrow side of the house in relation to the street, a house is either gabled or semi-detached.
