Rust in the tank - what can you do about it?

Tanks can begin to accumulate both dirt and rust inside over the years. What specifically leads to this article explains how to avoid rust formation inside the tank. The possibilities of rusting rusted tanks and repairing rusted tanks are also covered in this article.

Emergence of rust in the tank

The most important factor in the formation of rust in tanks is the ethanol contained in the fuel. Ethanol absorbs moisture. This happens especially when the vehicle or motorcycle is standing for a long time and is not moved. Modern fuels contain even more ethanol than in earlier times.

The moisture in the tank when standing causes the inside of the tank to slowly corrode. The tank can still look rust-free.

In classic cars, which are standing for many decades, the gasoline residue on the inside is transformed into a tough tar-like mass. This measure, if not removed, may also cause engine damage and piston seizures during initial operation.

Prevent rust formation

For motorcycles that are in the garage during the winter season, and for vintage cars, the advice to leave the vehicle always with a full tank is quite controversial. Especially with a full tank, the ethanol can attract even more moisture. If the tank is empty, however, the residual moisture may also be responsible for corrosion. Good advice is so expensive here. There is no such thing as a patent remedy.

Remove rust in the tank itself

Basically, this is possible, but it is not recommended in severe cases. For rusting strong acids such as hydrochloric acid and phosphoric acid are usually used. The remainders of the acids are poisonous waste, which one can dispose of itself only with difficulty.

There is also the risk of uneven rust and high risk of injury. If you want to de-rust your tank yourself, it is best to use oxalic acid.

Remove rust in the tank

Especially for motorcycle tanks, there are a lot of specialists who take over the rust removal and renovation relatively inexpensive. For the motorcycle tank that usually costs from about 130 - 150 EUR including sealing. The services usually include:

  • complete interior cleaning of the tank
  • complete derusting of the tank inside
  • complete sealing of the interior
  • Repairs (welding) during perforation or near-perforation

Professionally rusting and sealing the tank is worthwhile in most cases.

Tips & Tricks

If you want to de-rust the tank with oxalic acid, it is best to use 10% acid. The paint is then not attacked.
