Preserving rust - is that possible?

Rust should always be removed as soon as possible. In some cases, however, it is desired to preserve the rust while preventing further progression of the rust. There are suitable funds for this. Where these remedies are used, how to use them properly, and what to think about when using them, you can read here.

Owatrol

Owatrol oil is a creep compound interspersed with special anti-rust components. It has the property of penetrating rust and displacing moisture and oxygen from the rusted areas. This prevents further progression of the rust.

The oil cures within 24 hours and then forms a strong, impermeable protective layer.

Owatrol oil is commercially available in different sized containers. If necessary, the treatment must be repeated more often. With regular use but the further progression of the rust is prevented.

application areas

There are different uses for Owatrol oil:

  • Rusty spots that can not be repaired immediately
  • as antirust primer or as admixture to paints and paints to increase the corrosion protection
  • if rust is desired for visual reasons - such as the vintage look of metal objects

Deliberate rust look

For many items, it is currently the trend to intentionally make them look old and rusted. Regular treatment with Owatrol Oil can help to keep rusted items in this condition.

The better alternative would be in this case, however, to completely rust the objects and treated with rust protection, and then to strike with a corresponding decorative color. There are decorative colors on the market that use an activator to create an inactive, even layer of rust. These decorative colors are also used for the rust look of vehicles.

Alternatives to Owatrol Oil

As an alternative to Owatrol oil is often called linseed oil. In its effect, however, it is not quite as reliable and predictable as Owatrol oil. It does not always completely penetrate rust layers and does not completely remove moisture and oxygen from the grate.

Even painting with underbody protection or greasing the rust does not always bring a reliable effect.

Tips & Tricks

Nevertheless, you should be careful with Owatrol oil if there is a rust on the car. It is not a substitute for effective cavity protection. In order to avoid rusting (also from the inside), you should repair rust on the car immediately.

FAQ - 💬

❓ Can you stop rust permanently?

👉 The good news is, corrosion of iron is preventable AND reversible. Using a rust converter paint on a rusting metal surface will stop the process of corrosion. Rust converters chemically penetrate existing rust, reverse the degradation and leave behind a high quality latex metal primer.

❓ Will rust stop if sealed?

👉 For stopping rust, the best and longest lasting result is achieved by eliminating rust and then using a primer to seal the metal from moisture and oxygen and then applying a top coating with paint or other coating.

❓ Can rusted metal Be Saved?

👉 In short, yes! That old wrought iron fence or steel gutter may look terrible, but with the right preparation and primer, most rusty metal surfaces can be restored to almost new. The first step is to clean off loose rust and flaking paint and then apply a rust-inhibitive primer.

❓ Can you turn rust back to metal?

👉 Unfortunately, the damage caused by rust cannot be reversed. Once the metal has flaked away, you can only stop any more rust from occurring or replace it.

❓ Can you seal rust?

👉 Everbrite™ will seal moisture out of rusted metal to help prevent further corrosion and will prevent rust stains. On most metals, two coats of Everbrite™ Clear Protective Coating are recommended. On raw steel or rusted metal, 3 to 4 coats are recommended because the metal is very porous.

❓ Will rust proofing stop existing rust?

👉 It is designed to prevent not only rust but also stop existing corrosion.

❓ Will rust spread if kept dry?

👉 A common misconception is that rust is like an infection that will spread on its own. The science tells us otherwise. The metal needs to be exposed to water and oxygen, so you can have an area that is extremely rusty and an inch next to it is completely fine because the paint or coating wasn't sacrificed.

❓ Will metal continue to rust if sealed?

👉 If you really could seal something perfectly and exclude all oxygen, then the oxidation reaction COULD NOT go on. However, it is really almost impossible to seal off the metal. For one thing, oxygen can diffuse through epoxy and paint and hence eventually react with metal to produce the oxide.

❓ How do you preserve old rusted metal?

👉 Everbrite™ will seal moisture out of rusted metal to help prevent further corrosion and will prevent rust stains. On most metals, two coats of Everbrite™ Clear Protective Coating are recommended. On raw steel or rusted metal, 3 to 4 coats are recommended because the metal is very porous.

❓ How do you seal rust?

👉 Working with a rust neutralizer is even easier. After a light sanding and dusting off, apply some rust neutralizer with a brush or try a rust neutralizer spray in a can. It will seal in the rust and create a tough polymer coating that is ready for primer and paint.
