Filtering all the water

Calculate the pump flow rate

The pump delivery must thus come to a certain minimum performance according to the following calculation: Total water volume divided by 4 corresponds to the minimum capacity of the sand filter pump per hour. So a 60,000 liter tank requires the following minimum pump flow: 60,000 divided by 4 is 15,000 l / h.

The filter throughput

In addition, however, the throughput capacity of the sand filter must also be adapted to the pump performance. This means that the sand filter itself must have a minimum throughput of 15,000 l / h. Now you have the basic parameters your sand filter pump must have.

In addition, your sand filter pump should be equipped with other features that allow a smooth comfort. Other functions in turn ensure a significantly simplified operation of the entire sand filter system. So a sand filter pump should be equipped with the following additional functions and features:

  • self-sucking
  • sufficiently large ball passage
  • Pre-filter with sight glass
  • low-noise operation
  • low power consumption
  • Chlorine resistant mechanics

Self-priming pump

The sand filter pump must run at least in the bathing season (of course by the pool) eight hours a day, but not the whole day. This means a regular switching on and off of the pump. Therefore, the self-priming or self-venting property is even more important. Otherwise, you must bleed the pump every day before commissioning.

The pre-filter should not filter the conventional dirt out of the water. Rather, he should ensure that the ball passage is maintained. Centrifugal pumps can also promote solids. Their size is defined by the ball passage.


Especially in a pool or pond, it can happen that correspondingly large solids are conveyed into the sand filter system. The sight glass also shows whether water or air is being pumped out of the tank. Air can lead to cavitation (air on the impeller) and thus serious damage to the pump.

Hair accidents at the sand filter pump

In addition, the sand filter pump must be able to handle hair. Because many conventional pumps would be characterized by the fact that many hair wrapped around the impeller would block this. Then the pump will burn through overload. Likewise, the resistance to chlorine should be a matter of course.

Maximum water column

Finally, the distance between the pool and the pump also plays a role. An ordinary water pump can work only in the range of negative pressure, but not vacuum. Thus, the length of the delivery line is limited, especially when a slope must be overcome. The maximum water column, which can be pumped by good pumps, is around 8 m.

Tips & Tricks

From all these characteristics and requirements, it can be concluded that not only the delivery rate is decisive. You should always opt for a sand filter pump whose efficiency is also particularly high. In particular, cheap sand filter systems fall quickly through the grid.
