Assemble a sand filter system

Sand filter systems are used for different areas. Even if the working principle is very simple, at first the individual components often cause confusion. Especially when assembling. In this guide, we explain the structure of a sand filter system, so there is no difficulty in assembling.

More and more sand filter systems

Sand filters are filter systems that filter mechanically when used correctly, but also biologically. Therefore, they are suitable for different areas such as swimming pool, aquarium, pond or well. Even at the sewage treatment plant, sand filters are useful. As a result, sand filters are spreading more and more over alternative filter systems.

However, there is often confusion when assembling because the construction of the sand filter system is not necessarily clear. Therefore, we have a conventional sand filter plant, as used in the pool or aquarium, first broken down into the main components:

  • Multi-way valve (4-way valve or 6-way valve)
  • Sand filter pump (circulating or suction pump)
  • Piping

  • Supply line (upwards) to the water distributor
  • Return line (from the bottom inside) of the filter star or filter cross
  • in between the filter medium sand
  • Starting from the filter star a vent line (or hose) inward above

The operation of a sand filter system

By a pool is a skimmer in the pool, which attracts the surface water. So the water is pumped into the pump and from here via the multi-way valve in the water distributor. The water is now pushed through the sand into the filter star. The multi-way valve returns via the return line to the water basin.

In addition, further connections lead away from the multi-way valve, which are opened depending on the position of the valve:

  • Filtering: the delivery cycle as explained above is open
  • Backwashing: instead of the return to the tank, the water is pumped from the valve to the wastewater connection, in addition the direction of flow in the filter is reversed (from the filter star to the top)
  • Rinsing: Conveying cycle as in filtering, but also to waste water connection
  • Circulating: conventional pumping circuit without filter (instead optional with a water heater)
  • Closed: all processes are closed so the degree of contamination can be determined

Using the functions of the multi-way valve, you can now understand the correct connections when assembling the sand filter system. Especially with regard to the length of the supply line from the skimmer to the pump, care must be taken to ensure that the intake path is not too clear above 8 m.

To be observed with the line construction

Because every self-priming pump can only work with negative pressure, but not vacuum. As a result, the delivery rate of the water column is known to be physically limited. In addition, make sure that all suction lines are closed airtight, as otherwise false air is sucked. It creates the impression that the sand filter system must be vented.
