Self-built, modern terrace roofing made of acrylic glass corrugated sheets

For many, the terrace becomes the second living room in the summer months, where you can relax and forget the stress of everyday life. So that you do not have to flee right in front of a balmy summer rain, the construction of a terrace roofing is worthwhile. Made of weather-resistant corrugated sheets made of acrylic glass, this can be easily built yourself. How to do this, we explain in this article.

What are corrugated sheets made of acrylic glass?

Acrylic glass is known to many under the trade name Plexiglas. It is a translucent plastic whose properties are similar to those of glass. The material consists of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). The material is extremely robust and about 30 times stronger than glass. Should it still break, it does not splinter dangerously, but it creates a smooth break.

For corrugated sheets made of acrylic glass, as you are used for patio coverings, you should pay attention to a sufficient strength. Since acrylic glass lets in more light than a glass pane of the same thickness, it stays wonderfully bright on the terrace. Use a high-quality product, as this usually has a ten to twenty-year manufacturer's warranty, including discoloration and hailstorm.

The materials used

Since the patio roofing must withstand heavy rain and storm, stable materials are important. For the framework, wood is a good choice, because it can be relatively easily processed and visually adapted to the appearance of the house by a matching coat of paint.

So that it does not get too dark on the terrace and in the house, we opted for the above-described roofing made of translucent acrylic glass corrugated sheets.

  • Corrugated sheets made of acrylic glass
  • Construction wood (support beams 160 x 160 mm, roof beams 100 x 160 mm)
  • H-post support
  • ready-mixed concrete
  • corner
  • wood screws
  • Screws and sealing caps for acrylic plates
  • spade
  • bucksaw
  • chisel
  • Drilling machine with mortar stirrer
  • spirit level
  • ruler
  • Cordless screwdriver or screwdriver
  • hammer
  • clamps
  • mortar trough
  • guide
  • as well as a stable, safe ladder

It is advisable not to tackle the setup alone, but with one or two helpers. Clear the terrace and the space around so that you can work without disabilities, which are always a risk of injury.

Which foundation is suitable?

A full-surface or strip foundation is usually not necessary for a patio roofing. Steel post girders cast in concrete provide sufficient stability. The wood also does not come into contact with the ground, which prevents weathering. Plan a roof overhang of at least thirty centimeters. So the posts are also protected in the lower area from rainwater.

Method:

  • Mark the foundation with the batter board.
  • Dig out foundation holes 70 to 80 centimeters deep.
  • About half fill with gravel and compact the material.
  • Pour post carrier with concrete.

Once the concrete has dried thoroughly, the posts are placed in the supports and fixed with screws. Leave one centimeter of air between the bottom of the post and the metal floor. As a result, no moisture nests form under the wooden post.

Now the beams are positioned on the support beam on the house wall and aligned there with a gradient of about 10 degrees. Fasten with frame dowels and screws. Then screw the front crossbars with brackets to the supports. Then the roof battens are attached. The distance between the individual slats should be 80 centimeters.

Here are several points to note:

  • The plates can be cut well with a hand saw with fine-toothed saw blade. Alternatively, you can also use a jigsaw or a table saw.
  • For drilling use special plastic drills. Make a test hole. Shows these cracks, which can lead to breakage, change the tool. In order to prevent stress damage, the drill holes for acrylic glass should be 3 millimeters larger than the screw diameter.
  • The corrugated sheets made of acrylic glass are laid opposite the main wind direction from the eaves to the ridge.
  • Attach the plates in a staggered manner: Start with a whole plate and in the second row with a halved one.
  • The side coverage is at least one, better two waves.
  • All fittings are covered with a sealing dome.
  • Bolt every second or third shaft in the overlap area of the waves on the corrugation with the special screws.
  • The edge, wall and corner areas, however, screw in the trough.

Do you need a building permit for this patio roof?

Unfortunately we can not give a general answer to that. The construction of a patio roof made of acrylic glass corrugated sheets is considered a modification or extension of a structural system. Here it is insignificant, whether it is a residential or permit garden house.

Almost everywhere terrace roofing up to a volume of 30 m³ is allowed without additional permission. However, this is not the case in all communities. Therefore, it makes sense, even before you set to work full of enthusiasm, to inquire briefly with the competent authority.

Tips & Tricks

Acrylic wave plates sometimes have a one-sided structure. This must always point down. So you take advantage of the self-cleaning effect of the material.
