Self-compacting concrete

Self-compacting concrete - benefits for the home improvement

Self-compacting concrete: self-compacting

In conventional concrete, proper compaction is one of the most important steps. Because only a carefully compacted concrete has no defects. In addition, this ensures that the concrete still has the required properties years later.

Differences between self-compacting and light-compacting concretes
At the end of the 1980s, self-compacting concrete was developed and used in Japan. This meant a revolutionary advancement of conventional concrete.

Lightweight Concrete (LVB) is used when only a very small vibratory energy has to be used for compacting. If no compaction is required at all, the concrete is called self-compacting (SVB).

Lightweight concretes belong to consistency classes F5 and F6. They have a high flour grain content and do not exceed the maximum limit of DIN 1045 - in contrast to self-compacting concrete.

Advantages and disadvantages of self-compacting concretes

SVB does not require any compaction measures. They vent independently by gravity alone. This process is made possible by the use of modern high performance polycarboxylate based plasticizers. As a result, it has a very good flow behavior and flows almost by itself to the level compensation - this also over long distances.

Due to these extremely good flow properties, even challenging formwork geometries can be completed without any problems. After stripping it shows an almost pore-free concrete surface. These desired properties are obtained in conventional concrete only by careful compression.

Another advantage of self-compacting concrete is its extremely high strength, which means that it is also used in bridge construction, for example. He has no nests on the concrete surface. In addition, SVB has a uniform concrete quality of very good durability.

The elimination of compression brings a not inconsiderable time savings. In addition, it is possible to completely dispense with the otherwise concrete layering of concrete, which is otherwise customary on construction sites, with corresponding bed heights of 50 cm.

As the noise of the vibrator is eliminated, this is another important advantage in construction projects in densely populated residential areas or in closed halls. As a result, for example, a concreting can take place overnight, without bothering third parties.

A disadvantage of the SVB is the higher price. There are also risks associated with the authorization.

The area of application of SVB
Self-compacting concrete is mainly used when the use of a conventional vibrator is not possible. This can be a dense reinforcement or a complicated and unfavorable form of the components, which do not allow satisfactory venting. On the other hand, the very good flow properties of the SVB make it possible to embed the reinforcement perfectly perfectly without any problems.

This preference is also used in the production of precast concrete parts. Due to the uniform and non-porous surface, self-compacting concrete is predestined to be the ideal building material for exposed concrete walls or for concrete walls and floors with particularly high visual demands.

Thanks to the material properties described above and its advantages, self-compacting concrete not only covers special areas of application, but also complements conventional concrete as a high-strength concrete in its area of application.
