Operating the sewing machine - the basics

Anyone who has never sewn with a sewing machine will find that very complicated at first. But once you understand the basics, it's much easier. Our contribution shows you once fundamentally, how you must deal with a sewing machine.

The most important parts of the sewing machine

First, get an overview of the most important parts of the machine:

  • Power connector
  • On-off switch
  • spool pin
  • Thread guide and thread take-up
  • spuler
  • Adjuster for the thread tension
  • Locking screw for the needle (the so-called thumb screw)
  • Presser foot and presser foot lever
  • Feed dog in the throat plate
  • the lower thread (below the throat plate)

These are the basic parts you need to know for an operation. It is important to know that the sewing machine always with two Threads works: the yarn and a bobbin thread.

Thread in the yarn

So you must first put the thread on the thread spool and connect through the thread guide and the thread take-up with the needle. The threading can make different complicated, depending on the sewing machine type. In any case, also read the instructions for the respective machine type.

If you have properly connected the needle thread (the thread) with the needle (through all the guides provided for it), you can open the stitch compartment and pull out the end of the lower thread.

Sew first stitches

Turn on the sewing machine and place a piece of cloth under the presser foot. Select stitch type and stitch length. Lower the presser foot. During the first stitch you have to keep upper and lower thread in your hand. When you step on the foot pedal, the machine sews with the set stitches.

Avoid pulling or pushing the fabric. It is automatically moved by the transporter, you do not need to do anything. After a few stitches, you can let go of the two threads. You can now continue the seam as you wish.

When you have finished sewing, raise the presser foot and cut the thread.

Important things to consider

The fabric is always so that he Left comes to rest next to the machine. Only in this way will seams become clean. Once the thread has been threaded, it can be used again and again.

All you have to do is lift and lower the needle, then you can change the fabric.
