Laying shingles - instructions and tips

If bitumen shingles are laid correctly and carefully, they have an amazing durability - much longer than one would think possible. How to proceed correctly when laying the shingles is explained in this manual.

There are some proven rules for the proper installation of shingles

In this country, bitumen shingles are usually used only for garden sheds and smaller buildings - basically, in the same way but also quite residential houses cover. In the US, this is even standard.

For two to three decades, such roofs will last without any problem before they have to be covered again. The low weight also makes the substructure significantly lighter, which in turn saves costs.

A correct installation is important. How to do that is shown in the instructions below.

Observe correct roof construction!

  • Use appropriate cover strip, V 13 or similar track.
  • Fit eaves moldings on the side edge and on the eaves
  • For chimneys and wall connections, always lay connection plates, glue shingles and attach trim strips

The laying step by step

  • Precast track (V13)
  • asphalt shingles
  • Adhesive for bitumen shingles if connecting plates are laid or the roof pitch is> 60°
  • galvanized roofsticks
  • ladder
  • hammer
  • Knife for shortening the shingles and the Vordeckbahn

1. Attach pre-lay track

Since the Traufleisten belong to the eaves under the Vordeckbahn, you must lay there first. Then the Vordeckbahn is laid on the eaves with 10 cm, on the roof surface with at least 5 cm overlap.

2. Mount the eaves of the roof side

Thereafter, the eaves strips are attached to the roof sides.

3. Lay bitumen shingles

Start with the beginning row at the eaves. You must shorten this row of shingles by half the width of the tongue and cut off the tongues to ensure correct laying.

The first row comes uncut on the front row, each successive row is shortened in width again and again by a half Schindelzungenbreite.

The number of nails per shingle and the nail points change with the roof pitch. Above 60° roof pitch, you also need to glue the shingles, in addition, significantly more nails are needed here.

4. First cover

The ridge is easily covered with shingles cut into individual pieces in double cover, the ridge ridge of the clapboard cover underneath must protrude evenly over both sides of the roof.

Tips & Tricks

Always glue the shingles to the connection plates with bituminous glue and attach a trimming strip.
