Optimal adjustment of a roller shutter motor


Blinds with an electric motor must be set to the end points (top and bottom) in older versions. However, caution is advised as you can damage the thread or the stopper used for it. Below you will find instructions and tips for adjusting the various roller shutter motors.

The different shutter drives

Electric shutters are opened and closed by means of an electric motor. You first have to differentiate between two different systems:

  • Tubular motor, directly on the roller shutter shaft in the roller shutter box
  • electric belt winder (surface or flush mounted motor on belt)

Tubular motors: electrical (mechanical) or electronic

But even these engine drives of the respective design are not all the same. As in other areas, development has also progressed dramatically in the shutter systems. For example, you have to differentiate between two variants of the tubular motor.

The electronically controlled roller shutter motor

The electronically controlled motor usually requires no adjustment. These motors switch off automatically as soon as a certain pressure has been reached. But this also means that the motors shut down when the shutter tilts when opening or closing. This protects the engine from overloading.

Electric (mechanical) roller shutter motors

This contrasts with the older tubular motor systems with mechanically adjustable end points. The procedure is described below in the manual. For electric belt winder you must follow the enclosed description as the adjustment procedure may differ slightly.

Set a tubular motor with mechanically adjustable end stops

The most important requirement: to be able to adjust the engine, it must already be installed. Also keep in mind that the motors can be mounted on the left or right, so they are practically reversed. Then the function is reversed (quasi upside down).

Adjustments on the roller shutter motor

You can see two screws inside the gearhead of the engine. From both screws goes (usually outward) an arrow away. In addition, there is a plus / minus setting for each of the two screws. With "Minus" shorten the engine running time, so the movement of the shutter, with "plus" extend it.

Precautions when setting!

As also described with the electric belt winder, here also a PVC stopper sits on the threaded rods. When the stop is reached, the switch is automatically actuated. However, this also means that, as with the electric belt winder, the engine running time can exceed the maximum lifting point - especially during initial startup.

Achieve the respective maximum end position and the motor does not switch off yet, disconnect the power plug immediately or disconnect the power! Otherwise, you can deal massively with the stop mechanism.

Adjust when running too long

Then turn the respective screw well in the minus direction. Retract the roller shutter and start full opening or closing again. Now (after turning the dial to "minus"), the engine should stop before reaching the end stop. By carefully turning to "plus", you are now slowly approaching the end position.

Distinguish endpoints and the maximum physical stops

Start from the time until the shutter is completely opened or closed. Under no circumstances may you set the end position to the maximum limit stop. Here it can happen that, despite the mechanical end point, the motor continues to turn a little further, damaging the stopper.

Repeat the adjustment procedure in the opposite direction

Once you have adjusted one side (up or down) in this way, repeat the process now at the other end position (below or above). Again, set the end position exactly to the point from which the shutter is completely closed or opened, but even before the maximum end stop has been reached.

Adjusting the electric belt winder

Basically, the memory is deleted by pulling the power plug. Then, on many devices, the various buttons are pressed until the shutter is on the respective end stop. Afterwards the respective key must be briefly pressed again to save. Usually there is an LED that indicates the respective status by flashing, lighting or flickering.

Under no circumstances must the respective button be pressed when raising or lowering until the final stop has been reached (and thus exceeded) since it can destroy the stopper or the thread thereof (often a plastic component on a threaded rod as a distance-related switch).

Tips & Tricks

Most shutter motors are products of renowned and well-known manufacturers. Also, if you no longer have documents to the roller shutter motor, a specialist dealer can help you with the information. You can also contact the manufacturer directly. However, this technology is installed in around 95 percent of all roller shutter motors. Deviating from this, there are relatively exotic systems that are hardly to be found. Then there is an adjusting screw. Before adjusting, test whether you can pull the screw out to a second position or push inwards (or if there is a corresponding gear that can be moved). In this case, both end points are controlled by the same screw or gear. However, if the screw is not to be pulled or pressed, it is a system in which you can only set one end position. Starting from the first set end position, the switch inside the shaft is then actuated also at the opposite end point. Again, the motor must never be operated beyond the maximum physical end point.
