The signs on the dishwasher

In addition to the European Union's energy efficiency label, there are other signs and symbols on dishwashers. Even dishes are often provided with signs that are interpreted as "dishwasher safe". Here are the main signs, symbols and meaning of the EU energy label.

Numerous signs and symbols on household electrical appliances

On dishwashers, like other electrical household appliances also, there are various symbols and signs. But also on crockery parts there are signs that are usually incorrectly connected to the dishwasher. Therefore, all characters, symbols and labels must first be assigned:

  • EU label in terms of energy efficiency class
  • manufacturer-related characters that are not subject to any standardization
  • Signs and symbols on dishes that are partly standardized or not standardized

The EU label for the energy efficiency class with all the signs on it

At the end of 2011, a revised energy label for dishwashers was presented. For whatever reason, but on older devices, only the power consumption was taken into account, but not the water consumption of a dishwasher. This, even though dishwashers and washing machines need a lot of water for their job.

Information, symbols and data on the energy efficiency label for dishwashers

According to the Federal Ministry for the Environment, it was simply the power consumption in the eye that had to be considered. This is among other data still on the energy label available. Overall, the EU label for dishwashers has the following characters and values (from top to bottom):

  • Energy label logo of the EU
  • under Roman I and II manufacturer and model name
  • on the left an alphabetical scale (including A +++, A ++ and A +) from deep green (A +++) to deep red (D) for power consumption
  • right next to it in the relevant column a black arrow with one of the letters as the applicable energy efficiency class
  • below right the power consumption per year (XYZ kWh per annum)
  • below the far left outside the annual water consumption (WXYZ L per annum)
  • right next to it the drying efficiency classes from A to G (A best, G worst)
  • right next to it the possible standard loading with place settings (xYZ)
  • next to the far right outside Noise development in decibels during operation (YZ DB)

Restrictions on device manufacturing

In the meantime, only new appliances of the energy efficiency classes A +++, A ++ and A + may be produced. Devices with lower efficiency classes can still be distributed if they are stock items.

Manufacturer information on the label are voluntary...

The various values, which are designed as a year, refer to an average of 280 rinses per year. The individual annual consumption can therefore differ significantly from this information. This is further complicated by the fact that all information is currently based on voluntary information from the manufacturer.

... which is why they should be interpreted with caution

So there are no rules in which rinse program the respectively apparent values would be noted. This in turn means that all values can come from different programs (short-term, standard, eco or pre-rinse programs). In other words, the manufacturers are allowed to communicate the best individual value.

Manufacturer's sign on the dishwasher

There are no creative limits to the signs that can be found on the dishwasher. Each manufacturer can choose his symbols as he sees fit. This can be clearly illustrated by the control for the regeneration salt of the dishwasher.

Symbols and controls for the salt level

In older dishwashers is usually no sign at all. Then you always have to make a visual inspection. In newer devices, in particular, the following symbols appear again and again: a cup or two entwined arrows (look like an S for salt). The arrows symbolize the operation of the water softener with respect to the regeneration salt while the cup is intended to represent an empty level.

Sign for missing rinse aid

The cup can also mean missing rinse aid. However, most modern devices have established a sun symbol whose sunbeams are dashed. If this symbol is present, it clearly refers to the level of the rinse aid. For older machines, a symbol may be completely missing. Instead, there may be a small window in the screw cap of the rinse aid filling container. A dark dot means full, with a bright dot and around it with a black ring half empty and with a white dot empty.

The instructions help you

Ultimately, all symbol symbols are explained in the operating instructions. If you can no longer find the instructions for use, remedy can often be found on the website of the dishwasher manufacturer. Even many Asian manufacturers of home appliances offer on their side all operating instructions for download. But beware! In particular, if you search via Google, explicitly appear in the English-language network again and again "user manual pages" on. These are either chargeable or compel download instructions for installing malware (such as unwanted search engine applications).

Signs on dishes that are often associated with dishwashers

On crockery parts are also often many different characters to find. For example, if dishes are suitable for the microwave. In this context, the LE sign (LE for food authenticity) is worth mentioning. Colloquially, it is often referred to as a "glass fork symbol". Again and again, this sign suggests consumers that the so-declared dishes are dishwasher safe. That is wrong.

The glass fork mark stands for food safe, not dishwasher safe

Rather, the LE sign means that the composition of the product has been tested for chemical and physical compositions and properties. So marked products are food safe. These may come into contact with, in or with, without, for example, the risk of Ausdämpfungen exist.

The temperature resistance of crockery products

The situation is similar with the temperature resistance symbol. This is red in the upper half with a degree and in the lower half blue with such a statement. Then it is then for example in the red area "+90" and below "-15" to read. This means that this product can be stored between 90 degrees plus and minus 15 degrees Celsius. It does not mean that it would be heat resistant in the dishwasher.

Tips & Tricks

In terms of whether a product is dishwasher safe, either a rinsing or washing machine indicated as a sign is used. However, some manufacturers also refer to the explanations given in words on the cleaning options on a dishwasher. Especially with products made of silver are often further information available. Because silver in the dishwasher is not equal to silver.

The water softening with regeneration salt is carried out in dishwashers via an ion exchanger. The enriched with sodium ions surface can be occupied by calcium ions - it softens the water. The sodium ions are displaced. If the surface of the ion exchanger is completely enriched with calcium ions, softening can no longer take place. The sodium of the regeneration salt displaces the calcium ions and re-enriches them with sodium ions instead.
