Silicone can be easily processed with natural stone with great care

Silicone is very popular as an ideal joint sealant for tiles and natural stone for several reasons. The waterproof and waterproof synthetic polymer is elastic when dry. There are also a relatively easy processing and a low price. The major disadvantage is the tendency to form greasy stains during processing.

Ceramic tolerates silicone easily

Synthetic silicone can be produced in many different ways. How far the use forms and product variants reach, shows the range from the sealant to the baking pan. Different chemical ingredients give the silicone its specific properties and behavior.

Since the use of cheap silicone cartridges also makes home improvement before a manageable task, it is the most widely used sealant as a sealant in the bathroom and kitchen. When choosing whether natural stone or tiles are chosen, this possibility can be the decisive factor. Ceramic tiles are completely insensitive to silicone.

Natural stone attracts greasy silicone

Unsealed natural stone slabs are at high risk of being damaged by contact with silicone. Not only the fat residues that get on surfaces can lead to almost non-removable grease stains.

The pores of natural stone form an entry gate for silicone. When natural stone is grouted with silicone, the fatty mass "wanders" into the stone at the edges. A very classic damage pattern are soiled edges after grouting natural stone slabs.

Special natural stone silicones

The flexibility in the production and composition of silicone allows to produce special natural stone silicone. The properties of the silicone are not completely eliminated, but are less opposed to the acidic properties of natural stone. Among other things, the flowing and creeping mobility of the silicone can be restricted.

If a shower or other constantly wet natural stone surfaces are grouted, only such special products should be used. On average, however, they are at least twice as expensive as the cheapest tile silicone.

Tips & Tricks

All natural stone types have different sensitivities and absorbency. Choose a silicone that was made especially for your natural stone type. Also color and Antipilvorstoffe can be attached to these silicones.
