Snails in the aquarium - attitude and elimination

With snails in the aquarium, the ghosts divorce, because while some very beautiful and useful species similar to fish as pets enrich the pelvis, other snails are a nuisance. Here we show both the attitude of the decorative and helpful species as well as the removal of introduced annoying snails.

Beauties and useful helpers - snails

In the freshwater aquarium live interesting tropical and native snails, some of which are not only beautiful, but also helpful in the care of the pelvis. Here we show the most popular species and their merits.

  • apple snail
  • Horn snail
  • pond snail
  • bladder snail
  • Tower snail
  • plate screw

Colorful giants - the apple snails

Apple snails, as the name suggests, can become as big as an apple. The case is right-handed and can have very different colors and drawings. Often the cases are bright yellow or striped. They are not that easy to keep in the aquarium, because of course they need a lot of food because of their size.

By mistake, these beautiful water creatures are unlikely to get into an aquarium, as they lay large egg packets. These can be up to 20 inches tall and placed outside the water. Already with about two weeks the apple snail is on average two to three centimeters large.

Cornucopia - elegant beauty

The posthorn snail is considered particularly beautiful because of its elegant housing. It grows to about three centimeters and shows a red to dark brown house. In contrast to many other snails, it does not damage the plants of the aquarium, but on the contrary only destroys the annoying algae.

Both on the plants and the decoration as well as on the slices the post-horn snail gently shreds off any algae growth. Healthy leaves only cleanse them, but old musty leaves become a meal. Therefore, the Posthornschnecke is an ideal roommate, who does a part of the cleaning work.

Useful soil dwellers - rooftop snail

The Malayan snail snail, while only about two centimeters tall, is particularly useful in the aquarium. The snail snail belongs to the species that give birth, so it does not lay eggs. It rummages through the bottom of the aquarium during the day and eats the plant remains and leftover fish food. At the same time, their ability to detect disturbances in the soil is helpful. In that case, the snails often look outside their ground area even in light and outside the fish feeding time.

But this little helper digs her garden like an earthworm. Who uses a soil fertilizer will probably not keep this long. For these roommates, therefore, a continuous soil layer made of substrate makes more sense. These snails hardly ever attack the plants, even if there is no additional food through fish food.

Dish snails and bubble snails - tiny helpers in algae removal

The bowl snail is very often overlooked, as it is only a few millimeters in size. The small roommates do not really harm the plants and feed mainly on algae and other waste. Although the bubble snail is similar to the mud slug on the outside, but rather is a friendly helper in the cleaning. It should eat algae and waste even annoying skin that floats on the water surface.

Mud slug - friend and foe at the same time

The second largest snail in our overview is the mud snail with a housing up to six centimeters in size. Although it is very useful when there is a rich supply of food, it can also be extremely annoying when it attacks the plants. If you still want to keep this domestic snail in your aquarium, you should always keep an eye on its number.

Annoying pests - to catch snails

Snails that have been accidentally brought into the aquarium with new plants or fish should be quickly caught again. They eat the plants bare and partially block the filter media with their eggs.

Buy snail trap

Small traps made of plastic, which often act like a UFO, are available in stores for only a few euros. Many can be adjusted so that only the small snails get caught in it and not the fish. The trap is placed in the pelvis in the evening and emptied daily in the early morning.

Housewife trap for snails

The housewife version of a snail trap is a piece of cucumber. This is peeled and put either on a dipper or on a metal shish kebab. The cucumber should not just be stuck in the ground because it can bum fast.

In the evening after switching off the lighting, the cucumber is then deposited with its holder in the basin. In the morning she is taken out with the snails on it. Unfortunately, you have to repeat this process several times, because there are still snail eggs and snails present in different stages of development in the aquarium, even if you may not see them.

Tips & Tricks

An aquarium can do a lot of work, but as you can see, there are many helpers who do a great deal of work for you. One of the above introduced types of snails should therefore be missing in any basin. You only have to pay attention to the size of the pelvis and the amount of snails, because even a friendly posthorn snail could attack the plants if it had to survive.
