So a swollen laminate floor can be repaired

Unfortunately, when a laminate floor is swollen, it can not simply be sanded off, as is known from a parquet floor. Nevertheless, there are ways to remedy this damage. However, as a rule, the affected bodies must be replaced.

What to do if the laminate floor is swollen at one or more places?

Flooring made of laminate is not without reason so popular. They offer a pleasing appearance at a relatively low price and are interesting alternatives to carpet floors. However, if you have a not very new laminate floor and it already shows the first damage, good advice is expensive. It happens very often that the laminate swells in one place. How do you repair such damage? What should be done if it is not possible to completely replace the laminate floor or to lay another floor covering? In fact, there are possibilities for a repair. However, this is more or less complex depending on the type of installation.

Replace defective areas on the laminate floor and the necessary effort

If you have found any defects in the laminate floor, you can cut them out and remove the pieces to replace them. However, this may be more difficult depending on the type of laying and processing of the original laminate floor. For example, if the soil is not stuck together, the affected pieces can usually be cut out with a saw and replaced with new parts. Of course, swollen laminate that has been previously attached with glue can be removed much more difficultly. In addition, corresponding pieces must be present for the replacement. Here are some pointers to keep in mind when fixing:

  • If possible, remove the defective areas with a straight cut edge so that they can be easily replaced later by spare parts and to keep the transitions as inconspicuous as possible.
  • Under the floor is usually still a Dämmfolie or insulating film. Swelled laminate is usually caused by moisture at this point.
  • If the defect is located in an inconvenient location, for example in the middle of the room, you may be able to help by moving laminate from a less visible location (such as under a cabinet) to that location.

Tips for the care of the laminate floor

With proper care, most damage does not occur at all. For example, laminate does not like moisture. Keep the floor dry as much as possible, even when cleaning. The used cloths should always be wrung out as well as possible before the floor is cleaned with it. Heavy soiling such as those caused by shoes can be cleaned with special cleaning agents and a cloth. Often the black discoloration can be removed very easily. Incidentally, cheap laminate usually swells much faster because it is much thinner than thicker and more expensive laminate floors. Therefore, make sure you have sufficient quality when purchasing to avoid unpleasant surprises caused by damage or swollen laminate.
