This is how woodworms can be effectively controlled - an overview

Woodworms are basically no worms, but they are wood-destroying beetle larvae. These larvae like to feed on our lumber, then to pupate and transform into the finished insects. The beetle females prefer to return to their eggs where they grew up: a process of destruction is set in motion, which must be stopped!

What to do against active woodworm infestation?

An active woodworm infestation can be recognized by the fresh feedings and the light drill dust that falls out. In order to combat the infestation, it is necessary to destroy all larvae in the wood or at least to kill the young beetles when hatching.

If the infestation is in the house or in furniture, you should better do without the poison club, because what is harmful to insects, usually harms the human! Fortunately, the fight also works with non-toxic means.

Heat, frost and biological agents often eliminate the infestation just as effectively as the chemical, but with a high level of infestation, a great deal of work can be expected. You should combat woodworms chemically only in an emergency.

What helps against woodworms?

Wood preservativesapplicationoperationproblem
isopropanolSoak wood and cover with plastic for 2-3 daysLarvae are poisoneddoes not always reach the core with thick wood
boron saltregularly sprinkle on affected areasdeparting beetles die and do not return for ovipositionlengthy method of control that is not directed against the larvae
Salmiakgeistin small bowls under foilpoisoning larvae and beetles by steamingnot usable over a large area, e.g. for a whole roof truss
Heat above 55 degreesPut wood in sauna or oven, set up building dryer or use solar and heating heatKill larvae and beetlescan lead to drying cracks in the wood
frostPut the wood in the freezer, outside in the cold winterLarvae and beetles freezeonly long, intense frost penetrates to the very core of the wood
chemical wood preservativespaint, soak, divethe insects are poisonedAgents contain substances harmful to health and the environment
Steaming with non-toxic gasesDo not pack the wood and pack it with e.g. steam with nitrogenSmother larvae and beetlescomplicated system for professionals

These agents treat infested wood more or less effectively, a guarantee of success is rare. Wood preservatives against insect infestation generally have a preventive effect and prevent new infestation.

After removing the woodworms keep an eye on the wood!

After eliminating the active attack with the remedy of your choice, it is better to keep the wood in sight for a longer period of time: there may have been a few remaining larvae, which in turn will turn into beetles and produce new eggs!

Even a completely new woodworm colony could settle: Fresh boreholes are recognizable by their light color and should result in a new treatment or a replacement of the respective wood element.

Tips & Tricks

Before you fight the wood-disturbing insects, you should check the exact distribution of the wood worms: For example, if the animals are sitting in the wood of the showcase, they might already have walked into the parquet floor underneath.
