How to properly defrost the freezer - with cleaning tips

The regular defrosting of the freezer is a time-consuming job. The removal of ice saves energy costs in the long term and preserves the quality of the food. Defrosting is easier with simple tricks and the chest ices up more slowly.

Ice increases power consumption

The thicker the ice layer in the freezer, the more difficult the cold can penetrate. It requires up to 15 percent more power to maintain the desired cooling temperature. If this temperature can no longer be reached, the shelf life of the frozen food is also endangered and it can become unusable.

Instructions for easy defrosting

Before defrosting, the freezer must be completely emptied. Then switch off the chest or unplug the power cord. The ice is thawing very slowly. You can put a pot of warm water in the chest, then it goes a little faster. Remove loosening ice only gently so as not to damage the walls of the freezer. Dew water should be wiped off immediately after the formation, so that not accumulate too large quantities in the chest. Once the ice has completely defrosted you can start cleaning. Gentle cleaning agents such as vinegar water or a soapy water are suitable for the interior care of the freezer. Then it has to be dried well. Remains of cleaning water freeze otherwise when commissioning the chest and provide new ice formation.

Aid for defrosting

  • Pot or bowl of warm water
  • Drip tray for condensation water
  • Dishcloths to wipe up
  • Detergents and cloths
  • tea towels

Prevent new ice formation

Plan the arrangement of food in the chest so that the most frequently used products are on top. This saves tedious searching when the door is open. The freezer must close well, so that no warm room air can penetrate. Whether the door seal closes perfectly, you can test with the Taschenlampentrick. Insert the switched on lamp into the chest and close the door. If no light penetrates to the outside, the seal keeps perfect.

Tips & Tricks

The easiest way to defrost is when outside temperatures are low. While the freezer is being defrosted and cleaned, the cleared food is stored on the balcony or terrace. Use defrosting to test shelf life data and discard expired food.
