The disadvantages of too hard water are well known. However, only a few know that even soft water can have unfavorable effects in some cases. The following article therefore explains the disadvantages of soft water.

Soft water definition

After determining the hardness of the water, it is possible to speak of soft water at values ​​below 8.4° dH.

This value is a threshold between soft and medium-hard water. It is also the optimum value for household water hardness.

Chemical properties of soft water

In hard water so-called hardeners are solved. At the same time, these hardness agents also cause silicates and phosphates to be dissolved in the water. They serve as a kind of chemical compensation for the hardness-forming agents dissolved in the water.

In soft water, these substances fall away. Soft water is therefore more aggressive than hard water. This has a disadvantageous effect in many areas.

Due to the lack of other substances dissolved in the water, such as phosphates and silicates, soft water has an aggressive effect on metal pipelines.

With hard water, these substances form a protective layer on the metal. With soft water, this protective layer can not form.

The dissolved oxygen in the water and the still existing carbonic acid can thus have a corrosive effect. They attack the metal lines and in the long term even lead to pitting in some cases.

Soft water and concrete

A similar aggressive effect has soft water on concrete surfaces. Soft water can thus lime compounds from the concrete solve. This also applies to rainwater. Its hardness is almost zero.
