Solvent-free adhesive

In all areas, the trend is away from solvent-based substances. In particular, coatings and colors have been the focus of recent years. In the meantime, more and more solvent-free adhesives are gaining acceptance. These can be used in an ever wider range of applications, but also come up against limits, as we show below.

Everywhere there are adhesives

Adhesives are hugely important in our modern world. Hardly any area can do without adhesives:

  • furniture industry
  • Automotive Industry
  • Commodities
  • Paper industry (cardboard)
  • Plastics industry

The automotive industry is driving adhesive development forward

The automotive industry, in particular, impressively shows that the future belongs to adhesives. So today most of the bodies are made of aluminum. That can only be welded very badly. Gluing is significantly better - and even firmer. But similar to the paints and paints, the environmental impact of solvents is also present here.

Functional principle of solvent-based adhesive

Solvents have been indispensable for a long time (and still are in certain bonding operations). The solvents keep a glue liquid. If the glue comes out of its container, the solvent evaporates and the glue hardens.

However, bonding is often accompanied by a chemical process called setting. Similar to soldering, the adhesive must penetrate the surface and cure. Therefore, bonding is often referred to as cold welding.

The use of solvent-free adhesives

Solvent-free adhesives use water instead of solvents. Using water-soluble adhesives such as glue or wallpaper paste, it quickly becomes clear that at least one of the two components must be open to diffusion when gluing two workpieces together so that the water can evaporate and escape.

It is more complicated to add with solvent-free adhesives

In addition, a higher pressure is needed to really secure the two parts. In addition, solvent-free adhesives are of course not frost-free. Due to the water content, a solvent-free adhesive stored for a long time may also tend to form mold. Of course, all these features significantly limit the application areas. Nevertheless, solvent-free adhesives are becoming more and more efficient.

Tips & Tricks

Actually, it is wrong to talk about water-soluble and solvent-free adhesives, for example. Because water is also a solvent. However, water is an inorganic solvent that faces most organic solvents.

Also, when solvent-based adhesive works more efficiently, solvent-free adhesive is justified. On the one hand, the environmental impact is significantly reduced. On the other hand, many adhesives are also used privately. Solvent-based adhesives often cause unnecessary health risks, especially to children.
