Store sound correctly for a short and long term

Clay is one of mankind's oldest manufacturing materials because it does not spoil. To keep it workable and not to be a victim of extraneous influences such as mold, proper storage is helpful. If the sound gets hard by mistake, it can be made supple again.

Store during processing

In general, moisture helps with short term storage of clay and airtight packing for long term storage. The moisture content should be kept as constant as possible while working with clay. The following tips for short-term storage are helpful:

  • Put the clay in a damp towel
  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Do not use a "warm" storage location like a window sill over a radiator
  • At high outside or room air temperatures moisten with water spray bottle

Store in the long term

The clay should be stored in a workable condition. To prevent drying and solidification, a softening kneading, possibly with sprayed water addition, is recommended.

The clay is pressed into sheet form using a rolling pin or a tool that can be used as such. Smaller individual residues are pressed into the main mass and "incorporated" by kneading. It is important to avoid organic inclusions of all kinds. If the clay can not be cleaned without residue, it should be disposed of.

Airtight packaging keeps the sound in the state during storage.

  • Wrapping in plastic bags and sticking with tape
  • Double-layer packaging reduces the risk of air supply from cracks
  • A low-heated room like a cellar is good for storage
  • Instead of bags, airtight closing plastic containers and cans are also suitable

Sound does not "rot"

Clay can not rust, does not decompose and can easily be reused even after years. Should he become (too) hard, he will be treated again. It is advisable to label the packaged sound, so that the contents of the package can be assigned beyond doubt even after a long time. It resembles many drugs when packaged, which can lead to unwanted associations.

Tips & Tricks

If you intend medium term storage, such as a few days or weeks, you can wrap the clay in a plastic bag with a freshly washed and damp towel for up to four weeks. Make sure that all foreign impurities remain outside.
