Filling technique: Effect filler: filling

How does spatula technology work? In the perfection of a Stucco Veneziano, Stucco lustro or Tadelakt, spatula technique is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and usually belongs in the hands of a professional. Anyone who acquires the technique in the context of a course and practices a lot, can certainly dare.

This manual is intended for DIY enthusiasts, who can achieve an attractive result with one of the effect fillers of the paint manufacturer. The selection is now large and very different in type and price. Whether marble look or more concrete, metallic shine or even a wall all in gold - that's a matter of taste.

For most putties, a base is applied first, followed by an effect putty. It is offered spatula technique in acrylic or dispersion and with various admixtures.

Filling technique with complete set

  • Effect Spatula Set (here complete set Gold Rush, royal blue by Alpina)
  • plus role
  • Tarpaulin or painting fleece
  • Masking tape or Frogtape

Tip: You should research the prices for the complete sets or fillers for filling technique, there are big differences here.

If you do not want to buy such special products, you can use emulsion paint and a suitable trowel and pigments to create very similar effects. You will also find some tips at the end of this manual.

Step 1: Prepare underground

For a good result, the substrate must be well prepared. Any existing wallpaper must be down before. Fill in holes and cracks and prime once (eg with white wall paint) to obtain a uniform hue as a substrate.

Step 2: Masking and covering

The wall or surface must be taped well all around. Who wants to provide a special area of a wall with the spatula technique, that sticks best from this edge with a very good demarcating tape under which no color or mass penetrates (eg Frogtape). Alternatively, the edge of the tape can be painted with white acrylic, then also penetrates nothing under the tape.

The floor and any furnishings in the immediate vicinity should be covered with tarpaulin or paint fleece.

Careful masking is very important in any painting work.

To protect the floor, lay out enough paint fleece.

Step 3: Prepare materials

The set used here consists of a CD, a so-called "base", a "finish" and a trowel. There is this spatula technique in gold (3 different gold tones) and the royal blue used here. Although it is called complete set, but the role and the material for masking and covering are also necessary if you want to comply with the specifications of the manufacturer. The roller should - as always, if you use a paint roller - previously moistened with water and well expressed, or knocked out.

Then stir the base well and fill in the bucket. Soak the roll well with the material by rolling it in the bucket several times in the mass.

A complete set contains all the necessary materials.

CD, base, finish and a rounded trowel are included.

Step 4: Apply base

The base putty should now be applied approximately (in strips of one meter width) with the roller on the wall. Immediately afterwards structure with the trowel in short arches. Since the job with the role is relatively thin, the result is rather subtle. Who wants to have the effect stronger, can apply the mass directly with a Japanese spatula a little thicker. For this purpose, with the spatula many spots are applied close to each other and then distributed with the smoothing trowel (as in the example with the finish see photo). Excess excess mass at the edge of the bucket again and again.

Ultimately, it also depends on how large the surface to be processed is. The set ranges according to the manufacturer for 7 to 10 square meters. This is good for applying the roller. Who wants to trowel it thicker, must certainly count on correspondingly more material consumption.

With Rolle, the base mass is applied according to instructions.

Smooth and structure with the smoothing trowel in short arches.

Step 5: Adhesive tape, tool and drying

The tape must be removed directly so that the material does not flake off at the edge, as long as the material is still wet. Then it is necessary to thoroughly clean the tool with plenty of water. Only when only clear water comes out of the roll, it is really clean enough for another use. Now the wall must dry for at least 12 hours before the next step can be taken.

Filling technique: Effect filler: effect

Remove the tape immediately after smoothing.

It takes a lot of water and patience until the roll is clean.

Step 6: Mask off and prepare again

Just like at the beginning, before the application of the base material, all surfaces have to be taped clean again and the floor covered. Then the next putty, the "Finish" is thoroughly stirred.

Step 7: Apply finish and smoothen

The finish is now - notwithstanding the instructions of the manufacturer - not also applied with the role, but directly with a spatula in many dense spots, to show this method here as well. This results in a stronger structuring. If you prefer to achieve a very even job using the smoothing technique, you should work with the roll, which produces a thinner layer.

When working with the smoothing trowel, always remove excess paint.

Filling technique: Effect filler: technique

Apply small portions of the finish tightly with the spatula.

An interesting structure and an intense, metallic blue.

Step 8: Dissolve construction site

In the last step, the tape is removed again, as long as the mass is still wet. Wash and wash off the tool, remove the masking material and allow everything to dry well. After another 12 hours, the wall is so dry that it can be handled normally again. In our case, the furniture is pushed back to the cabinet back wall.

Tips for processing

  • For larger areas work best as a couple. One rolls up the material, the other works with the trowel.
  • Always wet in wet work, so that there are no approaches on the surface.
  • If you want even more shine, you can finish with clear coat, gloss wax or wax dispersion.
  • When masking a wall, leave a frame completely clear, which looks like a passe-partout in a picture.
  • Spatula technique in the bathroom can handle a water-repellent finish or wax very well.
  • With Inkagold (there are also many other colors) you can also apply beautiful metallic gloss effects.
  • A scraping grid or a paint tray are helpful.
  • If you are not sure, take a wooden board and practice it before it hits the wall.

Spatula technique Marble look

Filling technique: Effect filler: technique

  • Spatula technique white marble z. B. Meffert Stucco fino Stucco fino wax emulsion
  • Trowel with round corners
  • Tarpaulin or painting fleece
  • Masking tape or Frogtape

For marble look, several spots are applied in dense and overlapping patches. In between, always allow to dry well, sand smooth with the dry, clean trowel and apply a new, overlapping coat of paint. Since structure is not desirable in the case, the paint application is always deducted directly as smooth as possible. It works with the smoothing trowel or stainless Japan spatula with rounded corners.

In the end, gloss is created by friction with the clean trowel or spatula and pressure. To do this, guide the trowel or spatula at a shallow angle to the colored surface and rub with circular movements.

Spread the wax emulsion over the entire surface and, after drying, bring to a shine again with the dry, clean trowel. When drying, pay attention to the manufacturer's instructions.

Spatula technique concrete look

  • Concrete optics z. B. Schöner Wohnen Betonoptik
  • plus role
  • Trowel with round corners
  • Tarpaulin or painting fleece
  • Masking tape or Frogtape

The application of the concrete look is practically no different from the instructions described above. But it is less about a spatula structure here. Rather, it is here when subtracting the effect color so often deduct so much that the base material applied below it shines through. The order of both layers should be done according to instructions of the manufacturer with the role.

Alternative filling technique with simple emulsion paint

Filling technique: Effect filler: filler

  • emulsion paint
  • If necessary, pigments silver or gold
  • Clear coat high gloss
  • Trowel with round corners

If you want to use an emulsion paint without a special filler to create a surface with a similar look, you can achieve a metallic effect through the addition of pigments, depending on your taste. At the same time, the dispersion becomes somewhat pastier due to this admixture and can therefore be better spatulated. Proceed as described above for the finish and spread the emulsion paint with the emulsion paint.

With the smoothing trowel this is then distributed in short arches on the surface and subtracted. Excess paint is repeatedly stripped off the bucket from the trowel. As soon as the color is applied, the flat smoothing trowel and as much pressure as possible are rubbed smoothly over the paint. In doing so, it compresses and develops glints in places.

If you want more shine, you can enhance the effect with high-gloss clearcoat. As an alternative to varnish, they can polish this spatula technique - for example with a polish wax.
