Magnetize stainless steel

Stainless steel also has magnetic properties and therefore can be magnetized. There are two different methods to choose from. Below we will show you how to magnetize stainless steel.

Requirements for magnetizing

First, it is crucial that only ferromagnetic metals can be sufficiently magnetized. These include the following metals:

  • iron
  • cobalt
  • nickel

When magnetizing the fundamental elemental magnetization is realigned (parallel). Stainless steel containing these alloys can therefore be magnetized. In addition, the process can be reversed and stainless steel can be demagnetized.

The magnetic alignment of different substances

However, substances have different magnetic properties. Substituting such a substance, so also stainless steel from an external magnetic field, the object is magnetized. The magnetic properties of substances:

  • paramagnetic
  • diamagnetic
  • ferromagnetic

Magnetizing a substance or workpiece

If a substance is now exposed to an external magnetic field, the internal magnetism is rectified and you get paramagnetic properties. This rectification also exists with ferromagnetic materials such as stainless steel. However, these aligned magnetic fields are much more stable.

Equip the inner field with an external magnetic field

Magnetization is achieved by simply stroking the stainless steel object with a strong magnet. Swipe in the same direction as often as possible. This now remaining magnetization in the stainless steel workpiece is called remanence.

Magnetize using a battery

By applying the external magnetic field, the electrons begin to flow, currents are induced. Therefore, you can do the magnetization with a battery (a conventional baby cell). Wrap a stainless steel rod around each end with copper wire. Connect one copper wire to the negative pole, the other to the plus pole of the battery.

Be careful when working with electricity!

Attention: pay attention to safety and wear rubber gloves. Also, do not completely insulate the wire. Also use an insulated stainless steel rod, from which you only strip off the ends. Do not use a car battery because large, dangerous currents can flow! These attempts should never be allowed to perform children alone.

Tips & Tricks

You can also demagnetize such magnetized stainless steels again. For example, hit it several times with a hammer on the stainless steel rod. High temperatures also demagnetize the workpiece. For example, if you want to permanently magnetize a refrigerator door, you may be able to disassemble the stainless steel cladding and attach a plate with magnets underneath.
