Paint stair railing

Stairs are initially functional components and are therefore used accordingly. But this also creates a mechanical wear. But many stairs also have a style-forming secondary task. Therefore, the regular sweeping from the stair railing is mandatory. What should be considered when painting the banister, you can read here.

Different locations of stairs

Stairways have the task of connecting levels or floors and making them easy to overcome. Here stairs are used differently in private housing:

  • within apartments
  • inside buildings (connecting floors, but open to the public)
  • as basement drains inside
  • as cellar exteriors outside
  • on the facade as external staircase
  • garden stairs

This also results in certain requirements for paints and colors

Depending on the location of the staircase, not only the mechanical wear and tear caused by entering the stairs is an important aspect. In the outdoor area, it is weather conditions, moisture and temperature fluctuations, which enforce the staircase in the interaction in addition strong. When choosing suitable colors and paints, this must be taken into account.

Typical materials for stair railings

Now, however, a distinction must also be made according to the material of the banister. Because of course, there are also different designs of stair railings here:

  • Wood and wood composites
  • Metal (ferrous metals, light metals, steel)
  • Plastics and glass
  • masonry banisters or parapets
  • Combinations of these materials and building materials

Choose the right product according to the banister

The main concern when painting stair railings is wood, wood composites and different metals. In order to choose paints and colors that have the necessary protective functions, the position of the stair railing must also be taken into account. So you can use exterior wood preservatives that provide UV protection and pest control. Metal paints must also offer UV protection and additionally rust or corrosion protection.

Paint banisters outside or inside the house

In the outdoor area, you can use products that you are not allowed to work with on the inside because they can be harmful to health due to the exhalation of certain ingredients. For interior use, we therefore generally recommend paints and water-soluble paints. However, you often have to provide such paints with a transparent protective varnish, which is then again solvent-containing. But the solvents are very limited here.

The abrasion resistance of the paints and paints

Another important product feature of varnishes and paints for the stair railing results from the use and thus wear. For particularly heavily used stairs, you should provide the stair railing with abrasion-resistant paints that are also impact-resistant.

Avoid mixing waterborne and solventborne products

In particular, if you specifically want to use water-soluble paints and paints, you also need to know which old paints exist. If these contain solvents, the old paint must be completely removed. This also applies the other way around, ie with solvent-based paints on water-soluble old coatings. The effects range from discoloration to detachment. It is therefore extremely important to adequately strip the stair railing in question (sanding, blasting, stripping, etc.).

Tips & Tricks

In a masonry stair railing this parapet is usually plastered. So you can also delete this surface. When painting, proceed as you would paint any other plastered wall. However, especially with stair railings, make sure that you do not use chalking colors, which could be quickly seen on your hands or clothing during short touches.
