Lay the stone carpet

Stone carpets are enjoying ever-increasing popularity. Not only the price-performance ratio is consistent, also offers the modern flooring countless advantages. If you also want to lay a stone carpet, you should pay attention in the execution of certain quality standards. Below you will find valuable tips.

What is a stone carpet?

The stone carpet consists of many small stones in a certain grain size. Different materials are used.

  • Crystals
  • Glass (also colored)
  • conchoidal fracture
  • marble
  • alabaster
  • sodalite

Especially in the quartz variety is enormous. In addition to colored quartz, there are also various quartz rocks and (semi) gemstones.

  • mica
  • rock crystal
  • Tigereye
  • Hematite (bloodstone)
  • Aventurine, green
  • Carnelian
  • Rose quartz
  • citrine
  • jasper

Not only very exclusive stone carpets can be implemented with it. If, for example, you believe in the natural healing properties of different stones, you can adjust your living space accordingly.

The stone carpet features to highlight

There are also very practical properties in stone carpets. Basically, a stone carpet is very resilient. The hardness of quartz is 7 and thus exceeds that of different tiles. This gives the stone carpet a high abrasion resistance.

Stone carpets in wet rooms

In wet rooms, it is now also very popular because the rough surface, which can be adjusted by a corresponding grain, also absolute slip resistance is given. Stone carpets permeable to water. For this reason, they are sealed in damp rooms with a pore seal, which nevertheless only minimally alters the surface structure.

Stone carpets in kitchens

In kitchens and other areas where food is processed and prepared, the stone carpet should also be sealed for hygienic reasons. But also not sealed the floor covering is very easy to clean. You can wet the stone carpet or clean it with a steam jet.

Further basic properties

Due to its structure, a stone carpet also absorbs sound, which is why it has the greatest possible sound-reducing effect and provides good acoustic insulation. The structure is also well-ventilated, so that there is an air cushion in the stone carpet. Therefore, he feels warm when entering (barefoot).

Stone carpets outdoors

In addition, you can lay stone carpets outdoors, as they are absolutely frost-resistant. In addition, you will never again have problems with ice, since the water runs through the stone carpet. Here we come to the peculiarities that you have to consider when laying stone carpets.

Requirements for the substrate

In the outdoor area, the substrate must be prepared so that the waterproofing layer lies beneath the stone carpet. To do this, you have to work a gradient into the lower layer so that the water can actually run off. In the stone carpet you do not have to consider this gradient.

Establishments to lay a stone carpet

When ordering, you recognize quickly. Whether it is a knowledgeable company that actually moves the stone carpet in high quality for you, or just wants to take the largest possible profit. Therefore, first the construction of a stone carpet.

  • waterproof layer (possibly under the screed)
  • Primer to minimize absorbency
  • slightly scattered quartz sand for better adhesion
  • Stone carpet in perfectly matched binder mixture
  • different coatings and / or pore closure

Waterproof layer

An unsealed stone carpet is permeable to liquids. Therefore, the stone carpet should never be applied directly to a water-sensitive underlayer (old wood floor) without proper sealing.

primer

The primer is enormously important. Each substrate has different absorbency and would absorb the binder (epoxy resin) to varying degrees. This "sucked off" binder is then no longer available for a long-term homogeneous and stable bond.

quartz sand

Any establishment that deals extensively with stone carpets knows that this will increase their attachment. It's just a real quality feature.

The binder (epoxy resin)

Here are the biggest differences. In general, however, 2-component epoxy resin is used. However, this binder is relatively expensive. So the amount of binder ultimately defines the total price for a stone carpet that you can lay.

Extremely important: the optimum amount of binder

According to the experience of operated, the stone carpets relocated for many years, the information from hardware stores and some providers are hard on the quality limit. Basically, however, the larger the grain size, the lower the binder requirement.

  • fine grain: grain size 2 to 4 mm, layer thickness 6 to 8 mm
  • average grain size: grain size 4 to 8 mm, layer thickness 8 to 10 mm
  • coarse grain size: grain size 8 to 10 mm, layer thickness 10 to 12 mm

Start with a fine grain of x percent. For the average grain size you calculate one percent less binder, then from the middle to the coarse grain then again one percent.

Here it can be saved to your disadvantage

Some suppliers assume a fine grain size of just 6 percent binder content. However, experienced stone carpet publishers already set the ratio at 8 percent, then one percent less, the coarser the grain size.

Marble: up to 10 percent epoxy resin needed

But that is not enough. Explicitly marble is offered in different varieties. But marble also has a relatively high absorbency, which can vary greatly depending on the variety. Starting with highly absorbent marble, you should even consider a binder content of 10 percent with a fine grain size.

The stones

Many quartz stones are now dyed. Pay attention to a high quality of dyeing, that is to say, to stones that were literally soaked in color and in which the coloring was not just superficial (with open-pored stone carpet material such as marble).

Sealing, coating, pore closure

As a pure pore closure, a transparent acrylic seal is chosen, which is suitable for stone carpets. In addition, there are still coatings with a variety of properties such as fluorescence, high abrasion resistance, special flexibility, high gloss, etc.

Shapes and patterns

One of the reasons stone carpets are so popular is the ability to incorporate filigree patterns, figures and color patterns. You can use stencils for all shapes. These templates act like a placeholder.

Where you want to have certain patterns, figures or color separations, these stencils are simply glued to the floor with double-sided adhesive tape. An experienced company always has a design company in the background, which manufactures the templates inexpensively according to individual specifications.

workmanship

Observe the workmanship also embarrassed during the stone floor. An experienced craftsman moves step by step, has several trowels and also a construction spotlight, with which he checks how smooth or uneven the stone carpet surface is (drop shadow).

Lay the abstract for the stone carpet

If you heed all the information we have put together for you, and the operation meets your requirements in relation to it, you will enjoy your stone carpet for many decades.

Tips & Tricks

Stone carpets also offer the best conditions for allergy sufferers. Due to its structure dust is hardly whirled up and on the other hand it can be easily cleaned.
